Division 1 - Laboratory Safety Services

Advise and support the assessment and control of risks from laboratory operations with special health and safety concerns
Plan and implement health and safety inspection programme
Plan and implement management programmes for the procurement of chemicals and the disposal of hazardous wastes, including the management of Dangerous Goods Stores
Plan and implement occupational hygiene programmes (e.g., exposure assessment)
Plan and implement environmental health monitoring programmes (e.g., monitoring of Indoor Air Quality and drinking water quality)
Plan and provide health and safety training to staff and students
Monitor food safety issues for catering outlets on campus

Advise on laboratory design with respect to health and safety
Formulate laboratory health and safety related policies, guidelines and procedures
Manage and assist in the risk assessment of research projects for subsequent approval by the Research Safety Sub-committee
Carry out pre-occupation safety checks for newly built or altered laboratories
Plan and implement health and safety management programmes for ionizing radiation sources and non-ionizing radiation sources

Plan and implement health and safety management programmes for engineering laboratories and workshops, campus facilities and campus events
Plan and implement health and safety management programmes for contractors
Provide advice and training on fire safety
Plan and implement health and safety management programmes for the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE)

Undertake core functions on office and budget administration, planning, quality assurance, and publicity
Provide secretarial support to the Health and Safety Committee and the COVID-19 Rapid Response Taskforce
Plan and implement outreach programmes and liaise with faculties, internal departments, student associations, overseas and mainland student groups, and government departments on health, environmental and safety issues
Promote safety awareness, collaboration and stakeholder engagement through health, safety and environmental activities and events
Coordinate emergency responses to pandemics and communicable diseases
Maintain and update the contents of the office website
Plan and implement health and safety management programs for the Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) and other research facilities of PolyU in Mainland China
