The Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Science 2023

The Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Science (FS) aims to give recognition to outstanding graduates of FS for their professional achievements and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. We are pleased to announce the results as follows:    Outstanding Alumni 2023 Award Title Outstanding Alumni Award in Entrepreneurial Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Name of Awardee Dr Ho Kam Piu (ABCT) Outstanding Alumni Award in Community Service Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science Mr Lin Pui Keung, Joseph (AMA) Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science Mr Sin Tak Yin, Alex (AP)   Outstanding Young Alumni 2023 Award Title Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science Name of Awardee Dr Leung King Chi, Franco (ABCT) Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science Dr Hu Yaohua (AMA)   Dr Ho Kam Piu Outstanding Alumni Award in Entrepreneurial Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science Dr Ho Kam Piu is currently the Chief Scientific Officer & Founder of GRST Holdings Limited. He studied for a Bachelor of Science (2001) and a Doctor of Philosophy (2006) in Chemistry at PolyU. After graduating from PolyU, he established GRST Holdings Limited, a green technology company to develop commercially viable water-based technology for producing and recycling lithium-ion batteries at lower cost with lower emissions. Under Dr Ho’s leadership, the company has raised funding by more than USD30 Million, and its proprietary technology has received a string of international innovation awards, including two Gold Medals from the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (2019) and a Gold Award in Hong Kong Green Innovations Awards (2019). As an alumnus of PolyU, Dr Ho has hired many our graduates to work at his company.     Mr Lin Pui Keung, Joseph Outstanding Alumni Award in Community Service Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Mr Joseph Lin obtained a High Diploma in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing from PolyU in 1986. He is currently a Business Development Leader for Corporate Affairs of Greater China, Cisco Systems, responsible for developing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnership and collaboration projects. He is devoted to promoting STEM education in Greater China. He has developed and led a flagship CSR program, Cisco Networking Academy, for over 20 years to drive STEM education and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) talent development in the Secondary and Tertiary sectors. This program has impacted over 1 million students since 2000 and received the Partnership of Excellence Award from the Ministry of Education, China (2017-2019). Mr Lin also supported PolyU staunchly and has been a member of AMA’s Departmental Advisory Committee since 2016.      Mr Sin Tak Yin, Alex  Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Mr Alex Sin obtained a Higher Diploma in Applied Science from PolyU in 1990. He is currently the Senior Sales Director at Synaptics. When working for Motorola/ Freescale Semiconductor, Mr Sin contributed significantly to developing the 2.5G/3G Mobile Phone and played a vital role in launching the first China local brand mobile phone in 2002. After that, Mr Sin joined the DSP Group as a Corporate Vice President of Sales, where he successfully promoted Digital Cordless DECT Catiq as a standard feature on European Operator’s home gateway for wireless voice communication to benefit over 40 million British Telecom and Deutsch Telekon Home Gateways. To give back to his alma mater, Mr Sin is keen to share his experience with our students and recruit our graduates for the company.       Dr Leung King Chi, Franco Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Dr Franco Leung obtained a Bachelor of Science (2011) and a Master of Philosophy (2013) in Chemical Technology from PolyU. He then earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2017. After that, he joined Prof. Ben L. Feringa’s group (2016 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry) at the University of Groningen as a postdoc fellow. Dr Leung returned to PolyU as an Assistant Professor in 2019, his research focuses on using synthetic organic chemistry to build new supramolecular structures, functions and hierarchical systems. He has published 25 research papers in leading chemistry journals, such as Nature Chemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society and Angewandte Chemie International Edition. In recognition of Dr Leung’s contribution to the field of dynamic supramolecular materials, he received the Croucher Innovation Award 2021, PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award 2022 and The Rising Star of Polymer Journal 2023.   Dr Hu Yaohua Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Dr Hu Yaohua received a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics from PolyU in 2013. His research interests include theory and algorithms for large-scale optimization and applications in statistics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and image processing. He has served as the Principle Investigator of 14 research projects, and has published 46 papers in prestigious international journals, such as SIAM Journal on Optimization, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Inverse Problems, and European Journal of Operational Research. Dr Hu also received the First Prize of the Outstanding Research Output Achievement Award of Computational Mathematic in Guangdong (2021), the Outstanding Young Scholars by the National Science Foundation of China (2022), and the Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Science Foundation of Shenzhen (2023). Dr Hu is passionate about sharing his knowledge with our students by delivering workshops and lectures, he also co-supervises our PhD student.    Congratulations to all the awardees!

PolyU Science scholar conferred as RGC Research Fellow 2023/24

Prof. Li Buyang of the Department of Applied Mathematics is conferred the RGC Research Fellow 2023/24. Prof. Li will receive a fellowship grant of HK$5.2 million for a period of 60 months to support his research on “Challenges, numerical analysis, and new computational methods for curvature-driven surface evolutions and related problems”. The RGC Research Fellow Scheme aims to provide sustained support for exceptionally outstanding academics, with a view to facilitating their full dedication to research and development. This year, the RGC has selected 10 RGC Research Fellows. We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Li for his dedicated efforts in pursuing research excellence.

Congratulations to Prof. Zheng Zijian, Chair Professor of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, on receiving the Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award (HKEST Award) organized by the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission. The HKEST Award aims to recognize outstanding contributions and excellence among younger generations in the HKSAR for their dedication and achievements in the arena of engineering science and technology through research, development, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Our heartiest congratulations to Dr Songhua CAI and Dr Kathy LENG of the Department of Applied Physics who have been awarded the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2023! Their research focuses on “Towards next-generation halide perovskites: in situ STEM characterizations assisted structure engineering” and “Scalable growth of 2D hybrid perovskite film” respectively. PolyU Science Innovations snatched six prestigious prizes at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

PolyU Science Innovations snatched six prestigious prizes at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, including 1 Special Prize, 2 Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, 2 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal, and 1 Bronze Medal. Consonant with PolyU's endeavours to promote knowledge transfer, our researchers have been transforming innovations into real-world applications. These award-winning innovations exemplify our efforts in addressing global challenges, which include a long-acting anti-obesity and insulin-sensitising drug, a microbial-derived Technology to remove microplastic pollutants, a portable ultrasensitive glucose sensor, an electroreduction system for Reducing CO2 emissions, all-in-one device for virus diagnosis, and food waste-derived 3D printing material. Two PolyU Science projects funded by Research Impact Fund

Congratulations to Prof. Terence Lee and Prof. Zheng Zijian of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology for receiving funding from the RGC Research Impact Fund 2022/23. The project led by Prof. Terence Lee is “A novel approach to target cancer stemness using peptidic chimeric antigen receptor (pCAR) macrophages”, while the project led by Prof. Zheng Zijian is “Flexible and Stretchable Batteries for Wearable Applications”. The two projects have been awarded a significant funding amount of HK$9.7 million.

Dr Amber Chiou and Dr Cesar Wong received the President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Services 2022

Congratulations to Dr Amber Chiou and Dr Cesar Wong of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology on receiving the President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Services 2022! Dr Chiou and Dr Wong have set up the PolyU Diagnostic Laboratory (PU-MDL), which became one of the HKSAR Government recognized local COVID-19 testing institutions. The lab has provided COVID-19 testing service to the PolyU community, Tokyo 2020 Olympics athletes and the Hong Kong Sports Institute staff amid the pandemic. The President’s award recognizes the team’s contribution and commitment to the community. Our warmest congratulations again to Dr Chiou and Dr Wong!

Five PolyU Science projects funded by the NSFC/RGC for Collaborative and Joint Research Schemes

Five research projects led by PolyU Science scholars have been funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Research Grants Council (NSFC/RGC) under the Joint Research Scheme (JRS) and the new Collaborative Research Scheme (CRS) 2022/23 Exercise. Under the Collaborative Research Scheme, two projects have been awarded a total amount of HK$7.164 million. While under the Joint Research Scheme, three research projects have received total funding of HK$3.555 million. The research projects cover topics in information technology, new material science and applied mathematics. The NSFC/RGC supports research projects jointly proposed by Mainland and Hong Kong researchers for their scientific merit.
