ENGL PhD Student Won the Best Paper of Novice Scholars Award

PhD student Mohammad Mosiur Rahman of the Department of English and Communication (ENGL) has won the Best Paper Award for Novice Scholars from the Hong Kong Association for Applied Linguistics (HAAL). The award-winning paper, co-authored with his supervisor, Chair Professor HU Guangwei, "Translanguaging and trans-semiotizing in English-medium classrooms: Upholding university's policies or constructing knowledge?", was published in Linguistics and Education. Mosiur presented the paper at the HAAL Postgraduate Event and Award Presentation Ceremony on 22 May 2026.

Building on Mosiur’s prior research and his current doctoral project, the study uniquely integrates language policy, language ideology, translanguaging, and trans-semiotizing within a unified framework. It offers critical insights into the tension between rigid institutional English-only policies and the fluid, multilingual, and multimodal realities of the classroom, highlighting how teachers and students navigate this conflict by drawing on their full linguistic and semiotic repertoires to construct knowledge and foster learning.
