Entrance requirement

The DDes programme accommodates the needs of mature and experienced industry professionals, leaders, and educators already holding a master’s degree in relevant disciplines.

The normal minimum academic qualification required is a master’s degree in related disciplines or an equivalent. All students must meet one of the following criteria:

  • A minimum of 1 year’s full-time teaching experience in an art or design profession in a recognised post-secondary institution, plus at least 1 year’s work experience at the supervisory or managerial level in the art, design, or related industries; OR
  • Substantial and relevant working experience (normally not less than 3 years at the leadership level in practice-based design or related industries); or at least 3 years of teaching experience in the art or design profession.


Unless an applicant is a native speaker of English, or his/her degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction is English, he/she will be required to meet one of the following requirements #:

  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language score of at least 80 or above (for the Internet-based test); OR
  • An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System.

 

# All English-language test scores are considered valid for 2 years after the date of the test.

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit by the department. Applicants may be required to attend an interview to demonstrate their language proficiency.

  • Interested applicants may obtain the latest application materials via the "Study@PolyU" website.
  • Applicants should make application online through the eAdmission System and submit the following documents.

 

Application Documents
  • Academic transcripts and certificates (Documents that are not issued originally in English should be accompanied by certified English translations.)
  • TOEFL, IELTS, or other equivalent qualifications are required for applicants who not a native speaker of English and their Master's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English
  • Personal Statement (a personal statement that includes self-introduction, career aspirations and reasons for pursuit of studies in this programme) 
  • CV (a personal resume summary of applicants' education, employment experience, professional qualifications, noteworthy achievements, and any relevant areas)
  • Portfolio (a portfolio providing the applicant’s professional works, consulting reports, etc,.)
  • Reference letters - 2 reference letters (at least one is from industry professional)
