Dr Yau is a distinguished scholar and practitioner in social work whose work focuses on advancing disability rights, inclusive research, and intersectional policy frameworks. She is currently a Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she leads the Wellbeing Research Unit. Dr Yau has contributed significantly to global advocacy efforts, representing Hong Kong at the United Nations in 2022 and contributing to NGO reports on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Her work challenges conventional models by advancing an intersectional approach to disability, with particular attention to  gender, race, and power in areas such as disability-affirmative sex education and restorative justice. Her contributions have been recognised through several awards within the disabled community, including the Disability Power 100 Award in 2024, a nomination for the UN Women’s Rise and Raise Other Award in 2021, and third place in Tatler’s Sixteen Women Fighting for Fairness in Asia in 2020. In 2025, she received The King Charles III Coronation Medal for her contributions to official coronation events.
