President's Dialogue with Alumni

PolyU builds a vibrant alumni community through all levels of engagement. On 13 April 2023, the President’s Dialogue with Alumni was successfully held in a hybrid mode, attracting over 120 graduates worldwide who joined the event on campus and via Zoom. President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, together with Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President of the University, shared with everyone the latest development and upcoming plans of PolyU. As the event came at a time when most of the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, President Teng was especially delighted to meet the alumni not only online but also face-to-face. To our graduates, in particular those attending the event physically, this was a unique homecoming opportunity for them to reconnect with their alma mater after trying times of the pandemic. To welcome everyone back to campus, the Alumni Affairs Office even prepared special souvenirs, which were greatly appreciated by our alumni. On this special occasion, President Teng presented to all Hong Kong, Mainland and overseas participants the various endeavours made by PolyU, including shooting up in higher education rankings, establishing research centres with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research for societal benefits, making breakthroughs in knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, as well as launching a series of campus development projects. Our alumni were also enthusiastic about different plans of the University, such as student growth and talent cultivation, alumni engagement, industry collaboration, Greater Bay Area development and other global initiatives. President Teng and Dr Lou had a fruitful exchange of ideas with all participants. They thanked everyone for joining this special event, which facilitated open communication to promote mutual understanding and rally support for institutional advancement. They encouraged graduates to stay involved by coming back often and taking part in future activities. Being proud of PolyU’s achievements, the alumni community also looked forward to working in closer collaboration with their alma mater in the long run.

Alumni Tourcation – Treasure Hunting in PolyU’s “Technical Library” 2.0

The Industrial Centre (IC) of PolyU boasts no shortage of gems waiting for treasure hunters to discover. On 29 March 2023, a group of alumni came back to visit this “Technical Library” and had an eye-opening experience learning about PolyU’s latest engineering facilities and equipment. Our participants were excited about exploring different areas of the IC. For instance, they went to the fifth floor that features 3D printing technologies, where the instructor demonstrated how they could aid researches in healthcare, engineering, product and fashion design. Another highlight of the tour was the Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HIVE), which uses virtual technology to create a lifelike environment that enriches teaching and learning. Our alumni also participated in the Robotic and Automation Workshop at the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIR Lab), where they were amazed by the world’s first autonomous case-handling robotic (ACR) system developed by Hai Robotics – established by two young alumni, this company is the first unicorn start-up nurtured under PolyU’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. All participants found this campus tour intriguing. As always, our Alumni Tourcations not only aim at taking a walk down memory lane by visiting campus attractions, but also endeavour to showcase PolyU’s research facilities that all members are proud of.
