Hotel and Tourism Management graduate

Outstanding Alumnus of School of Hotel and Tourism Management 2002

Chairman and Founder, THE PLACE Shanghai

“It is a meaningful pursuit in life to be able to help other people succeed.”

A pioneer, teacher and consultant in the hotel and tourism industry in the mainland, Nixon Chung is a well-respected figure to many in the field. He is the first outstanding alumnus of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at PolyU. After graduating from the then Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1983, Nixon joined the first 5-star hotel in the mainland– the China Hotel in Guangzhou as a deputy training manager.  Since then he has developed a distinguished career in the field.

In view of the severe shortage of senior hotel management staff in the mainland at that time, Nixon engaged in nurturing professionals by personal example and giving lectures. He travelled to major cities across the nation, offering trainings to executives in many mainland hotels. As a result of his efforts, groups of talents with management skills reaching international standard were trained for the country.

In 2004, Nixon set up his own company offering consultancy service to the hotel, tourism and property fields. The cultural and creative industry complex set up by him in Shanghai - The PLACE, provides commercial services to foreign enterprises eager to enter the China market and Chinese enterprises keen to venture abroad.

Nixon does not limit himself to personal success alone. He often says, “It is a meaningful pursuit in life to be able to help other people succeed.”  As pledged, he renders active service for society, sponsoring venues for charity activities, offering volunteer services for youth development centres and orphanages in Shanghai. He has also given back to his alma mater PolyU, taking part in various activities such as classes, welcome gatherings for interns and alumni association meetings. His love for the university is passed on to his daughter, who is now studying at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, furthering the family’s bond with PolyU.

Locally born and raised Nixon developed his career on the mainland. There he witnessed the national development brought by open economic reform, while implementing his life pursuit of “helping others to succeed”.
