Every time she steps onto a golf course, it is never something she takes for granted.

Ms Coco Tsoi Lai-wing was once a taekwondo athlete who thrived on the power and speed of combat sports. Then, without warning, her body began to fail her – her limbs no longer obeyed. At first, she brushed it off as ordinary sports injuries, but the warning signs persisted. After repeated injuries, medical tests and two years of uncertainty, she was finally diagnosed with ataxia.

Balance, coordination and walking – what once came effortlessly now had to be relearned. For a young sports lover, it was not merely a physical setback; it felt as though life itself had been put on pause.

But Coco refused to let her diagnosis define the ending of her story.

Instead, she stepped into the world of adaptive golf. The sport may look calm and composed, yet it demands immense core strength, focus and stability. For Coco, every effort to stand steady, rotate and swing is a lesson in trusting her body again. There are frustrating days and moments of doubt, along with countless hours of quiet practice. Shot by shot, step by step, she keeps going, turning “I can’t” into “Let me try again”.

Her perseverance eventually carried her onto the international stage. This March, Coco travelled to Japan to compete in the 3rd Glico Paragolf Championship. On a highly challenging course, she not only completed the tournament but also secured a tie for eighth place (T8), raising her World Ranking for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD) to 35th. The result is certainly encouraging, but even more inspiring is the proof that new possibilities can be discovered within physical limits.

Off the green, Coco holds another professional identity: MRI physicist.

With a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and a master’s degree in Environmental Management and Engineering from PolyU, she brings rigorous scientific training, sharp analytical skills and a deep commitment to patient safety to her profession. MRI imaging enables medical teams to uncover vital clues hidden within the body, and Coco’s expertise lies in shedding light on the space between technology and clinical care with clarity and precision.

Having experienced injury, diagnosis and rehabilitation first-hand, she understands better than most that behind every scan may be a patient anxiously awaiting answers or a family confronting the unknown. University training equipped her with professional skills, while life experience deepened her sense of purpose.

Coco’s resilience is not about never falling. It is about choosing to rise, again and again. She has rediscovered her strength on the golf course and continues to be a source of light to others in her professional role.

Life may not always allow us to remain in perfect balance. Sometimes balance can mean reclaiming your old rhythm; sometimes it can mean discovering a completely new way to stand firm. After all the highs and lows, would you still be willing to find your new centre of gravity and swing your own remarkable shot?
