Biography

Ir Cheung obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Aeronautical Engineering/ Fluid Mechanics from Bristol University and Imperial College respectively. He obtained an MBA Degree from the City University of Hong Kong while working full-time.

 

Ir Cheung joined PolyU’s AAE Department in Sep 2019 as training instructor in AAE’s Flight Training Organisation. In early 2021 he was appointed as Chief Training Instructor in the Department’s HKAR-147 Maintenance Training Organisation, focusing on the HKAR-66 basic aircraft maintenance training to AAE Department’s undergraduate students.

 

Prior to joining PolyU, Ir Cheung had gained over 30 years’ aviation experience from both the local airlines and MRO where he had been engaged in a variety of roles which included technical training, supply chain management, component engineering and technical services/value engineering.   


Ir Cheung began his aviation career by joining Cathay’s Flight Operations Department as Operations Training Specialist to develop and deliver various aircraft type courses, e.g. Lockheed Tristar L1011, Boeing B747-200/300/400 and Airbus A330/A340 to Cathay’s pilots and aircraft engineers. After 8 years or so, Ir Cheung transferred to Engineering Department, where he assumed various managerial positions in cabin project management, inventory planning/management, logistics management and component engineering for the Cathay, Dragon and Air Hong Kong fleet.  


In 2012, when Cathay and HAECO formed a JV i.e. HAECO Inventory Technical Management Ltd. (HAECO ITM), to manage Cathay’s expensive aircraft inventory, Ir Cheung was seconded there to set up and lead a Component Engineering team to, among other responsibilities, develop both technical and commercial solutions to improve the on-wing performance and reliability of all critical components installed in ITM customers’ fleet with over 250 aircraft. He left HAECO ITM as Head of Component Engineering/HAECO ITM in 2017.

 

Other than his current appointment at Poly U, Ir. Cheung has served in various committees/sub-committees of HKIE and some local vocational/higher education institutions. He was the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of HKIE’s Training Review Sub-committee and Training Committee respectively. He is currently the Chairman of HKIE’s Discipline Advisory Panel (Aircraft), Ex-officio member of HKIE’s Qualification and Membership Board and Registration Committee (appointed by the Engineers’ Registration Board), Chairman of the Industry Advisory Committee of HKUST’s MSc programme in Aeronautical Engineering and External Examiner for the Youth College’s (under VTC) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Programme.

 

Ir Cheung is a Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), a Chartered Engineer and a Registered Professional Engineer.
