Aims & Characteristics

Aims & Learning Outcomes

The aim of the BRE Scheme is to provide an academic platform to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in the fields of building and real estate through experience of real-world methods and practices. Graduates possess intellectual, vocational, and practical skills relevant to building and real estate and demonstrate independent thinking, curiosity, confidence, and professionalism.

Programme Characteristics

Applicants to the BRE Scheme may choose from the following three programmes:

BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management

This programme provides students with a rich education in building engineering and construction project management. Our graduates are in great demand in the professional building and construction management sectors because they are well prepared to adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and possess the expertise necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise, and control the multiple complex processes involved in building projects.

BSc (Hons) in Property Management

This programme equips graduates to provide strategic business solutions for corporations and institutions that capitalise on real estate as a business asset, deploy real estate to enhance business value and competitiveness, optimise corporate resources, improve users’ experiences, and prepare for the trends of tomorrow. This is a professionally recognised education programme with a global and practical vision. Offering a wide range of subjects related to building and real estate, the programme provides an interdisciplinary education in property and housing management, facilities management and real estate asset management.

BSc (Hons) in Surveying

This programme nurtures future professionals in the fields of building surveying, general practice surveying (real estate), planning and development, property and facility management, and quantity surveying (construction economics). Graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue professional careers in surveying and real estate, and to lead strategy and policy making in the land, property, and construction sectors.

Characteristics of Scheme Based Admission

Students admitted to the BSc (Hons) Scheme in Building and Real Estate will complete a common first year curriculum. Students would then be required to indicate their priority on preferred programmes / majors after the first year of study.

Approximately 40% of students in the Scheme will receive an unconditional choice to their preferred programmes / majors without any restrictions, determined by the ranking of their DSE admission scores and interview scores for JUPAS students, or by means of other relevant outstanding academic results for non-JUPAS students. Qualified JUPAS and non-JUPAS students would be informed at the time receiving the Notice of Offer.

The remaining approximately 60% of students will be required to indicate their priority on preferred programmes / majors before the end of first year of study. These students will then be ranked by their overall GPA scores after one year of study to determine the allocation of their preferred programmes / majors to join in the second year of study.

Student Message

The undergraduate course Building and Real Estate (BRE) at PolyU piqued my interest in the real estate industry and equipped me with a solid foundation for my postgraduate studies and career. I am currently working in the Investment Department at Savills, using my expertise to advise those active in the commercial real estate market on investment, redevelopment, and owner-occupation issues. This involves property acquisition and disposal at every level, from individual investments to property portfolios. This work is interesting and challenging! Many thanks, BRE!

Chan Wai Yan, Vivien

During my four years at PolyU, I gained more than I ever expected. Through internships, hall life, Service-Learning trips, club activities, and exchanges, PolyU provides many opportunities for students to realise their potential.

Travelling to the UK as an exchange student was a highlight for me. I had never been away from my home town for so long. During my time abroad, I was exposed to a different culture and tasked with making a life in a foreign country. I found that I became more mature and was motivated to develop my problem-solving skills to overcome unforeseen challenges on my own. This was an unforgettable and enriching experience.

Living in halls was a great way to immerse myself in university life. The various events on campus put me in close contact with students from different faculties, in different years, and with different backgrounds. Students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and enjoy all of the activities on offer.

Lam Lai Ting, Sandy

I am grateful to PolyU and BRE for the opportunity to study in the Department of Architecture at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia as an exchange student for about 6 months. This experience broadened my horizons and extended my international network, which was of great benefit when I worked as a project manager and had to hold conference calls with client representatives across the world.

With BRE’s support, I was also able to join the Preferred Graduate Programme, undertaking summer internships at Nanjing Construction Bank and the largest developer in Xi Shan in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Working for a state-owned company and experiencing the Chinese work environment were crucial to my professional and personal development.

Leung Chin Pak, Patrick

Studying Property Management at PolyU was an immensely fruitful experience. The programme offers comprehensive coverage of the field, with high-quality teaching and practical training. I will never regret enrolling in this programme, as it equipped me to pursue a successful career and gave me many opportunities to develop lifelong skills.

My three years of study at PolyU prepared me well to enter the workplace. The Work-Integrated Education component of the programme equipped me with skills in practical property management and communication, helping me to both address building defects and handle customers’ enquiries. I am also grateful to BRE for offering me the chance to travel to Australia as an exchange student, which was a very memorable experience. After graduation, I was fortunate enough to be chosen from more than 1,900 candidates to serve as a management trainee at Link. I believe that my time at PolyU prepared me to tackle the challenges I now face.
