Aims & Characteristics

Programme Characteristics

LMS aims to provide innovation-driven education and scholarship in the logistics and maritime fields, comprising high-quality research, professional training, and consulting activities relating to shipping, transport, supply chain and operations management, and global business and logistics.

Our programmes provide students with a well-rounded business education centred on supply chain management and analytics, aviation management and finance, international shipping and transport logistics, and global business and logistics. The curriculums are designed to meet the current and future needs of the relevant industries. The programmes emphasise active student participation and industry collaboration.

After students complete a common Year 1 curriculum, they are invited to choose one of the following awards, indicating the area of study in which they will specialise until graduation:

  1. Aviation Management and Finance (BBA-AMF)
  2. International Shipping and Transport Logistics (BBA-ISTL)
  3. Supply Chain Management and Analytics (BBA-SCMA)
  4. Global Business and Logistics (BBA-GBL)*
*Dual Degree with the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.

If students wish, and subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

BBA (Hons) in Aviation Management and Finance

This programme equips students with a well-rounded business education with specialisation in aviation management and finance, an in-depth understanding of how airports, airlines, aircraft leasing companies, government agencies, regulators, and other groups of professionals, such as financial services firms and consultants, contribute to the functioning of aviation markets; and the necessary background required to become an integral part of the aviation industry.

BBA (Hons) in International Shipping and Transport Logistics

This programme provides a well-rounded business education, along with the opportunity to specialise in international shipping and logistics management. It enables students to acquire wide knowledge of maritime transport and logistics within a general broad framework of international transport and trade.

The programme fosters strong management skills in areas including communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem solving and the effective use of information technology. Graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to understand and manage maritime organisations and personnel.

BBA (Hons) in Supply Chain Management and Analytics

Supply chain management focuses on how firms optimise resources in a logistics network that delivers value to end customers. As Hong Kong is a logistics and trading centre of global importance, supply chain management is of particular relevance to many businesses and industries. With the advancement of technological innovation and business analytics, the integration of management knowledge and analytical skills becomes essential for supply chain managers to make effective decisions.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education that specialises in supply chain management and analytics. The curriculum aims to develop students’ skills and knowledge in business and supply chain analytics, information technology and innovation, operations and cross-functional management, international business, and transport logistics to meet the current and future needs of logistics and supply chain related industries.

Dual Degree with the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

BBA (Hons) in Global Business and Logistics [PolyU]
BSc in International Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) [CBS]

The Copenhagen Business School (CBS) was established in 1917 by the Danish Society for the Advancement of Business Education and Research. Today, with 20,000 students and 1,500 employees, CBS is one of the largest business schools in Europe and one of the 8 Danish universities. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes within business, typically with an interdisciplinary and international focus. CBS is accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), AMBA (Association of MBAs), as well as AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), thus making it one of the few schools worldwide to hold the triple-crown accreditation.

Students admitted to the programme will spend the first two years at PolyU, then final two years at CBS. Upon completion of the programme, students will be awarded two degrees in business, BBA (Hons) in Global Business and Logistics from PolyU, and BSc in International Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) from CBS.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, in mainland China, or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission

Students follow a common curriculum in the first year under the Scheme. The common curriculum offers students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, which facilitates their Major programme selection.

The decision to admit students to a Major programme will be made by the Department based on the students’ choice and their overall GPA of Year One study. Students will be asked to rank their choices of Major programme during Semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department’s consideration and approval.

The number of students admitted to any one major will be capped at 40% of the actual intake number of the corresponding cohort.

Student Message

My four years of study at PolyU as an international student have been more than fulfilling. The International Shipping and Transport Logistics (ISTL) programme has prepared me well as a critical thinker in many respects. The programme has trained me to take ownership of my studies, and is also flexible in allowing students to select the elective subjects that they desire the most. The academics are passionate and professional in their own field, giving me a chance to learn from various experts in the shipping industry. During my course of study, I had the chance to visit Cambodia, Taiwan, Beijing and Mexico due to the ample opportunities provided by PolyU and the scholarships awarded by the Department. The experience I have accumulated at PolyU is certainly more than I could have wished for, and I have no regrets about choosing ISTL as my degree.

Joycelyn Poi

Studying at PolyU was an exciting experience for me. Throughout my four-year programme, I met great people, from students to professors and industry experts, with whom I learned about myself, my discipline of study and my future work prospects. The knowledge I acquired was practical, which became clear when I applied theories and skills to my work. The University also helped me to find suitable internships to further enhance my abilities.

Besides developing my career prospects, PolyU helped me to meet people from around the world. There were many different kinds of events, which gave me the opportunity to get to know people with similar interests and hobbies. The University truly has a unique vibe, integrating international and local experience. I was not only exposed to local Hong Kong culture, but also had many chances to meet people from around the world, helping me to become a truly global citizen. Furthermore, the University is located right in the heart of the city, easily accessible to major locations, which helped me to explore Asia’s World City.

IVANKIN Igor

You will feel empowered, enriched and enlightened not only by the Global Supply Chain Management (GSCM) programme, but also by the global and dynamic vision of the University. Although GSCM focuses on logistics networks, you will learn about more than just optimisation, gaining essential insights into the pragmatic competencies needed for a forward-thinking perspective in many or even all types of industries. Not just GSCM lecturers, but also other faculty members are brimming with compassion and zeal to educate future prospects like us.

As a non-local student, I particularly appreciate the University's vision of integrating internationalism and localisation to encourage personal growth and open-mindedness, offering a university life I wouldn’t miss out on! Opportunities range from scholarships to competitions; I went on an exchange trip to Copenhagen and a study tour in the UK, and took up an internship in Hong Kong. The best part has been joining various schemes and projects beyond my studies, which have enriched my physical, mental, spiritual and social life. University life is a time in which we can explore and discover many things while stepping out of our comfort zones to be inspired and learn.
