Summary
How does design shape social change? Join us for an evening dedicated to the launch of this vital new volume, which redefines our understanding of Asian design histories. Moving beyond traditional Eurocentric narratives, The Dynamics of Modern Asian Design: Material Culture and Social Agency, published by Bloomsbury Visual Arts, explores how material culture acts as a powerful force for social agency, identity-building, and cultural transformation across the continent.
The event will open with a presentation by the book’s editors, Sandy Ng and Megha Rajguru. They will introduce the volume’s conceptual framework, highlighting how objects and environments reflect the complex social shifts of the modern era.
Following the introduction, we will host a dynamic panel discussion featuring several of the book’s contributing authors. Together, they will dive into diverse case studies—from grassroots activism to urban landscapes—revealing the intricate relationship between people and the things they create.
Whether you are a designer, historian, or student of culture, this talk offers a unique opportunity to engage with the scholars at the forefront of global design discourse.
- All PolyU staff, students, and members of the public are welcome. Event registration is required (deadline: 20 Apr, noon).
