Summary

What do you carry with you when you leave home, and what do you bring back?

In this talk, Seewhy, a PolyU Communication Design alumna turned cross-media artist and designer, traces her journey from Hong Kong to the Netherlands, where she followed her curiosity from symbols and mysticism into the craft of letterpress type casting.

Through the Hong Kong Type Recasting Project, she has been helping to bring historic Hong Kong type back to life. Returning to where her design journey began, she shares how design and heritage craft connect, and why it matters to carry traditions forward while continuing to explore. Students will also have the chance to handle lead type she has cast herself.

The lecture is moderated by Prof. Brian Kwok, Programme Leader of BA Information Design at PolyU Design.

The talk will be conducted in Cantonese. All PolyU staff and student are welcome.

Keynote Speaker

Seewhy (Ng Cho Yiu)

Cross-media designer and artist

Seewhy is a cross-media artist and designer whose practice spans photography, graphic design and heritage craft. A graduate of Communication Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, she followed her interest in symbols and mysticism to the Netherlands, where a chance encounter led her to the Hong Kong Type Recasting Project. Since 2020, she has trained in letterpress type casting at Stichting Lettergieten 1983 and cast Hong Kong type for the project, and she now brings the craft into her own artworks. Her work has been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Dutch Design Week. Through her own practice, she explores how traditional craft can carry meaning and cultural memory into the present.
