Prof. CHEN Changwen honoured with SIGMM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award

Congratulations to Prof. CHEN Changwen, Management Committee Member of PAIR and Chair Professor of Visual Computing, for receiving the SIGMM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest computing society.  The Award is the highest award of SIGMM and one of the most important awards in the international computer community.  It is awarded annually to researchers who have made significant and lasting contributions to multimedia computing, communications, and applications. Prof. George LIU Zhizhao appointed as Chief Scientist of Meteorological Observation Center of China Meteorological Administration

Congratulations to Prof. George LIU Zhizhao, Member of the Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS) and the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Research Institute for Smart Energy (RISE), and Associate Head (Partnership) of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, for being appointed as the Chief Scientist of the Meteorological Observation Center, China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Prof. Liu is an internationally renowned scholar in geomatics research and application. Over the years, his laboratory, the Micro-Laboratory of Atmospheric Research and Geomatics Engineering (Micro-LARGE), has conducted academic research in the field of geomatics and developed related technologies that significantly contribute to important aspects of society. These include precise positioning algorithms and data quality analysis for Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), ionosphere scintillation monitoring and 3D Total Electron Content (TEC) modelling, impact of space weather on satellite navigation and flight operation, monitoring of atmospheric water vapor and 3D modelling, retrieval and calibration of satellite remote sensing water vapor data, and assimilation of atmospheric water vapor into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, etc.

Prof. CHEN Jianli elected as American Geophysical Union Fellow

Prof. CHEN Jianli, Member of the Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS) and Professor in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, has been elected to the 2024 Class of American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fellows, in recognition of his outstanding leadership and scientific achievements in the field of space geodesy and climate change.  The AGU is the world’s largest earth and space science association. The AGU fellowship is bestowed annually to recognise a select number of individuals who have made exceptional contributions to their fields. Since its inception in 1962, less than 0.1% of AGU members have been selected as Fellows every year. This year, a total of 53 outstanding individuals were selected.

139 PAIR scholars ranked among worlds top 2 mostcited scientists_2000 EN

One hundred and thirty-eight PAIR scholars ranked among World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024

A total of 138 scholars from PAIR and its 19 constituent research units were ranked among the “World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024” in the latest list released by Stanford University, and five of them were among the top 20 scholars in the world in their own areas of specialty. The named PAIR scholars were included in the “Career-long Impact” list based on their career-long citation impact. The latest ranking reflects the influential research of PAIR researchers and PolyU’s leading position in multiple research areas. The ranking compiled by Stanford University covers over 100,000 top scientists across the globe. The database grouped scientists under 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields. Prof. CHAI Yang wins Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year Award 2024

Congratulations to Prof. CHAI Yang, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Science and Professor in the Department of Applied Physics, for winning “The Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year Award 2024” for “breaking the wall of efficient sensory AI systems”. Prof. Chai has conducted groundbreaking research on sensory (AI), paving the way for more energy-efficient, low-latency and memory-optimised AI systems, and bringing significant enhancement to diverse applications such as mobile devices, IoT sensors and edge computing. He has developed novel hardware architectures and optimisation techniques, which enable the deployment of advanced sensory AI systems in mobile devices, IoT sensors and edge computing, transforming applications in smart cities, autonomous vehicles and industrial automation. The Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year Award was initiated by the Berlin-based Falling Walls Foundation, to recognise the latest breakthroughs and outstanding science projects worldwide. This year’s Falling Walls Global Call received over 1,000 entries from 52 countries. Prof. Chai is one of the top ten winners in the Engineering & Technology category. Congratulations to two PAIR scholars, Prof. CHAI Yang, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science (Research) and Professor in the Department of Applied Physics, and Prof. Tommy WEI Minchen, Professor in the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering, on their election to the Young Member Section of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES) in 2024! Prof. Chai is currently a Management Committee Member of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems (RI-IWEAR), and a Member of the Photonics Research Institute (PRI), the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Research Institute for Smart Energy (RISE) and the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Internet of Things (RIAIoT). Prof. Wei is a Management Committee Member of the Photonics Research Institute (PRI), and a Member of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, the Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV) and the Research Centre for Digital Transformation of Tourism (RCDTT).  The HKAES Young Member Section, comprising engineering professionals at or under the age of 45 at the time of admission, serves as a platform for members to connect, collaborate, and contribute to the development of engineering and science in Hong Kong.

Dr SHOU Dahua bestowed PolyU Graduate School Outstanding Research Postgraduate Young Alumni

Congratulations to Dr SHOU Dahua, Member of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems (RI-IWEAR), the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports) and the Research Centre of Textiles for Future Fashion (RCTFF), Limin Endowed Young Scholar in Advanced Textiles Technologies and Associate Professor in the School of Fashion and Textiles, for receiving the PolyU Graduate School Outstanding Research Postgraduate Young Alumni Award 2024. Dr Shou’s research interests include personal thermal and moisture management, advanced textiles, intelligent wearables, and soft robotics. He has published nearly 100 papers in renowned academic journals and holds three U.S. patents and over ten Chinese patents. He is also the leader of over 20 research projects supported by various funding schemes of the government and the University Grants Committee. He is also the founding Programme Leader of the MSc in Intelligent Wearable Technology at PolyU. Dr Shou received the Distinguished Achievement Award from The Fiber Society in 2023, a prestigious honour awarded to only one recipient worldwide annually. He was listed among the Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, he won the Gold Medal at the 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2024, and received the TechConnect Global Innovation Awards in 2021 and 2022. He serves as an associate editor and editorial board member for seven SCI journals (Q1/Q2). He will chair The Fiber Society Spring 2025 Conference at PolyU.
