Student Message

My first year in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) has been an amazing journey. The programme I attended within the LSGI department aims to build a strong foundation in the surveying and GIS discipline while igniting our thirst for knowledge. The versatility of the course structure allows us to choose from a broad range of specialised electives, creating a distinct combination among the students that will contribute to the development of our career pathways.

My learning experience at LSGI was greatly enhanced by the teaching facilities provided by the department. I have applied theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom on practical assignments using modern surveying equipment such as total stations, automatic levels, drones, and the latest geo-informatics software. I also enjoyed attending survey camps that serve as an end-of-semester assessment to train students to conduct surveying tasks in different challenging environments.

As the LSGI department is renowned for its reputation in the industry, it captivates collaborations from prestigious companies and institutions. I was given the opportunity to join two study tours to visit the China University of Geosciences and Tongji University, both top-notch universities in the city of Beijing and Shanghai, during my summer holiday.  I attended seminars on the latest research projects conducted by the universities while deeply immersed in the local cultural tours. This experience has certainly reshaped my perspective on the use of surveying and GIS to solve construction and environmental-related issues in the community.

LSGI is a world-leading department in geomatics, with numerous cutting-edge research achievements, and it provides comprehensive and professional courses for undergraduate students. LSGI students will learn to use traditional and modern surveying equipment such as total stations and automatic levels. In addition, students will gain knowledge of relevant software including 2D and 3D computer aided drafting (CAD) and geographic information systems (ArcGIS).

One of the most rewarding aspects of my university experience was the practical learning opportunities provided by state-of-the-art laboratories and fieldwork experiences. These practical courses allowed us to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enabling us to become proficient in utilizing various measuring instruments, exercising our problem-solving abilities, and enhancing our understanding of complex geographical spatial concepts.

Furthermore, the staffs are not only experts in their fields but also passionate educators. They have guided us through complex concepts and encouraged us to think critically.

Studying LSGI has been a rewarding experience that has equipped me with the necessary professional knowledge and skills for my future career. I also encourage you to embark on this exciting journey.
