Microsoft Exchange Web Services retirement

Microsoft will retire Exchange Web Services (EWS) and replace it with Microsoft Graph.

Users of Microsoft Outlook Desktop, Outlook Web App (OWA) in a browser, and the Outlook Mobile App will not be affected by the retirement of EWS, and no action is required.

 

What is Exchange Web Services?
EWS is a legacy technology used by selected email applications to access Exchange Online mailboxes. Microsoft has announced the following retirement schedule:

1 October 2026: Phased disablement of EWS begins

 

Who may be affected?

Users of third-party applications may experience issues if their applications continue to rely on EWS. These include:

Apple Mail (macOS 11 Big Sur or earlier), Spark, Edison Mail, eM Client, Mailbird, Canary Mail, Airmail, Aqua Mail, Fantastical, Feishu, Lark and Cronofy.

 

What should you do?

  • Use the latest version of your email application
  • Consider switching to Microsoft Outlook for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android or Outlook Web App (OWA) for the best compatibility
