9th Head of Department Professor Jintu Fan assumes office

The 9th Head of Department Professor Jintu Fan assumed office on 24 September 2018. Professor Fan is also appointed as Chair Professor of Fiber Science and Apparel Engineering of Fashion & Textile Technology - Textiles at PolyU.

Professor Fan joined ITC in 1996 as Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001 and then to Professor in 2005. He left PolyU in 2012 and joined the Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design at the College of Human Ecology in Cornell University, USA as Vincent V. C. Woo Professor and Department Chair.  During his tenure with Cornell University, he orchestrated the establishment of the Cornell Institute of Fashion & Fiber Innovation and is the founding Director of the institute.

In response to his appointment as Head of Department, Professor Fan says, "I am greatly honored to come back to ITC to serve as Head of this premier institute in fashion and textiles. I would like to thank you for your trust and the confidence you have placed in me! In the next few months, I intend to hold extensive consultations with you and other stakeholders including students, alumni, industrialists and university administrators to formulate a strategy for ITC to move forward."

After completing his doctoral studies at The University of Leeds, UK in 1989, Professor Fan joined Bradford University, UK, as Postdoctoral Research Assistant.  From 1992 to 1996, he worked as Project Manager in the Division of Textile Technology for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa. 

Professor Fan is internationally renowned in his field of specialism.  His research focuses on improving understanding of the interactions among the human body, clothing and environment, and on that basis, developing fibrous materials and clothing with enhanced functional performance and aesthetic appeal.  His work is multi-disciplinary and involves instrumentation, computational modeling, biomimetics, nanotechnology as well as psychology.  He has successfully applied for a number of competitive research grants and published over 220 SCI/EI refereed journal papers, many of which have appeared in leading journals of relevant fields, including Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B: Biological Sciences, Soft Matter, Langmuir, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, and Textile Research Journal. 

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Fan has been honoured with a number of prestigious awards, including:

  • Warner Memorial Medal from The Textile Institute, 2016
  • Morgan Sesquicentennial Fellow from Cornell University
  • Honorary Fellow of The Textile Institute, 2010 (the highest honour within the institute for creativity and advancement of knowledge)
  • Gold Medal Award - 32nd International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, 2004
  • Distinguished Achievement Award from the US-based international Fiber Society, 2003

Professor Fan has a prominent international standing in the field of fashion and textile.  Currently, he is the elected President of the Fiber Society and Director of the Shanghai International Fashion Innovation Center.
