The Faculty of Construction and Environment of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has the largest concentration of expertise in Hong Kong in construction and environment-related disciplines. Organised into the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE), the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), and the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), it is in a unique position to take advantage of its prime location to play a leading role in sustainable urbanisation as well as smart city development in the region and beyond.

Distinguished by a culture of excellence, our academics actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation. Their prolific activities have put the University in the 22nd place globally and the 1st place locally in the discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering of the 2023 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject. In the discipline of Architecture and Built Environment, PolyU is ranked 16th globally and 2nd locally. We also rank 62nd in the world and 3rd in Hong Kong for Environmental Sciences. These three categories cover most of the disciplines offered by the Faculty.

The academic programmes of the Faculty are well-known for preparing students for professional careers and leadership positions in a wide range of disciplines. Virtually all aspects of construction from land, building, quantity and general practice surveying to environmental, building and civil engineering design, to actual construction and its management, to repair, refurbishment as well as the operation and management of built facilities are covered by the Faculty's programmes. Thousands of our graduates have established themselves in various sectors of the construction industry and environmental field in Hong Kong and beyond.

Besides carrying out its mission to nurture quality graduates for society, the Faculty continues to conduct world-class research in strategic areas in collaboration with national and international partners. For many years, the Faculty has successfully secured competitive research funding from the Research Grants Council in Hong Kong. Research outcomes of our staff are often applied to challenging problems in real life. The knowledge transfer of our basic research to industry also benefits the community at large. Notable examples include five RGC Theme-based Research Scheme projects that secured a total of HK$ 200 million in funding:

  1. Photochemical Air Pollution in Highly Urbanized Subtropical Regions: from Micro Environments to Urban-Terrestrial-Oceanic Interactions
  2. Sustainable Marine Infrastructure Enabled by the Innovative Use of Seawater Sea-Sand Concrete and Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Composites
  3. SureFire: Smart Urban Resilience and Firefighting
  4. Healthy and Resilient City with Pervasive Localised Comfort Hubs
  5. Unravelling the Black Box between Air Pollution and Public Health for Transformative Air Quality Management
