PolyU receives donation from Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation to launch the Phase 3 Service Programme of the PolyU-Henry G. Leong Mobile Integrative Health Centre

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) received HK$11.31 million from Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation in support of the Phase 3 Service Programme of the PolyU-Henry G. Leong Mobile Integrative Health Centre (MIHC). The launching ceremony was held today (15 May) at PolyU campus with PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong and Dr Edwin Leong, Chairman of Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation, as the officiating guests. With the generous donation from Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation, PolyU's School of Nursing (SN) set up the first-of-its-kind mobile integrative health centre on a modified truck in 2007. MIHC is well equipped with a variety of advanced health screening equipments, enabling healthcare professionals and students from SN to provide comprehensive health screening services and education to the elderly in need. Besides, MIHC also offers a platform for scientific research on elderly and provides PolyU students with placement opportunities. In 2010 and again this year, Dr Leong continued to support the second and third phase service. New equipments and facilities were added onto MIHC and its scope of service was also extended. In the past eight years, Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation fully supported the operation of MIHC, which has served more than 4,000 elderly in the community with a total number of visitors of 40,000. Addressing at the ceremony, Prof. Tong said, "MIHC combines three very important elements in one single entity, namely service, research and education. While SN staff and students strive to monitor the health of the elderly, the Centre also takes up the roles to facilitate scientific research in response to the ageing society, as well as to provide placement opportunities for PolyU students. It truly illustrates PolyU's new slogan 'Opening Minds • Shaping the Future'. I would like to thank Dr Leong for his continuous unfailing support to PolyU and MIHC." Dr Leong remarked, "Hong Kong is facing ageing problem. By 2041, there will be 2.6 million elderly aged 65 or above in the city. In line with government policy to promote 'ageing in place', MIHC will continue to upgrade its services to help more senior citizens while also provide opportunities for research and placement." The Phase 3 service programme of MIHC involves the addition of new equipment including a vision screener for basic vision checking. The Centre will collaborate with non-profit organizations to set up mini health check stations to provide health education and case screening. Elderly with special needs will be referred to MIHC for proper care and advice. Researchers will also make good use of the data collected at the MIHC in a hope to provide insights in dealing with the aspects related to elderly epidemiology, community health and screening of high risk groups. On the education side, the Centre will provide more service learning opportunities for PolyU students.

PolyU celebrates the Second Inauguration of Endowed Professorships

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today (13 May) held the Second Inauguration of Endowed Professorships at the Jockey Club Auditorium on PolyU campus to pay tribute to distinguished scholars for their outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to the community, as well as to demonstrate the support and recognition from the community to PolyU for its research excellence. Presided over by the Deputy Chairman of Council of the University, Mr Chan Tze-ching, the ceremony saw the presentation of a total of six Endowed Professorships, bringing the total number of Endowed Professorships established by PolyU to 14, alongside two named professorships by the then Hong Kong Polytechnic. Addressing the Ceremony, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, said "Through the Endowed Professorships scheme, we have established the valuable partnership between our scholars and supporters, as we share the same goal of advancing the frontiers of knowledge and technology for the benefit of mankind. Building on our heritage, we are determined to challenge boundaries, uncover knowledge and strive for innovation, as manifested in our new brand promise 'Opening Minds. Shaping the Future'." PolyU establishes the “Fung Yiu King - Wing Hang Bank Endowed Professorship in Business Administration”

he Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held a luncheon at Hotel ICON on 19 January 2015 to express its appreciation to Professor Patrick Fung Yuk-bun for the setting up of the “Fung Yiu King - Wing Hang Bank Endowed Professorship in Business Administration” through a donation made in the name of the Fung Yiu King Charitable Foundation Limited. It is the eleventh Endowed Professorship since the launch of the Endowed Professorship Scheme in 2012. Professor Fung is a long-standing supporter of PolyU and higher education. He was the University Treasurer of PolyU from 1993 to 1996, and was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration by PolyU in 2001. Dedicated to the teaching and research of business administration, Professor Fung is currently an Honorary Life Vice President of the PolyU Foundation and Adjunct Professor of PolyU’s School of Accounting and Finance, a position which allows the beneficent banker to groom young talents for Hong Kong by drawing on his expertise in business and finance. The Endowed Professorship Scheme aims to provide a unique opportunity for members of the public to advance the research and academic activities of a specific discipline through donating to PolyU, as well as to honor distinguished scholars for their outstanding achievements. The establishment of this Endowed Professorship not only represents the community’s recognition of PolyU’s achievements in business administration, but facilitates further development of the discipline.

PolyU National Agricultural Holdings Invitational Golf Tournament successfully raises funds for student development

The "PolyU National Agricultural Holdings Invitational Golf Tournament" was held on 15 January at the Palm Island Resort, Huizhou. Over 40 golf teams were formed by prominent business and community leaders from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, as well as friends and alumni of PolyU. Of all the teams, four were represented by PolyU alumni hailing from the Chinese mainland. A total of HK$2 million has been raised for supporting student's all-round development. Professor Angelina Yuen, Vice President (Institutional Advancement and Partnership) of PolyU, represented the University to attend the Kick-off Ceremony. Prior to the ceremony, Professor Yuen presented a souvenir to Mr Ricky Cai, CEO of the title sponsor, the National Agricultural Holdings Limited, cum President of Precursor Management Inc. The Kick-off Ceremony was officiated at by Professor Yuen, Mr Cai, Mr David Ting, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Tournament, Dr Dennis Ng, Convenor of the Committee, and the four Honorary Chairmen of the Committee, namely Mr Y. F. Lee, Mr Bob Chong, Dr K. C. Yip and Mr Peter Lau. Professor Timothy Tong, President of PolyU, attended and officiated at the Prize Presentation Ceremony. During the ceremony, Professor Tong as well as other guests presented souvenirs to the members of the Organizing Committee and the winning golfers and teams. Individual golfers contested for the "Best Gross Score" and "Best Net Score", while the teams competed for the "Honorary Chairman Cup", "Industrial & Commerce Cup" and "Company Cup". Other awards included the Champion and 1st Runner-up of the "Alumni Cup".

PolyU celebrates the establishment of the “Alex Wong Siu Wah Gigi Wong Fook Chi Endowed Professorship in Product Design Engineering”

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held a luncheon at Hotel ICON on 9 December 2014 to express its gratitude to Mr Alex Wong and Miss Gigi Wong, as well as the King's Flair Development Ltd, for establishing an endowed professorship in product design engineering. The incumbent of the endowed professorship will be Professor Alan Lau Kin-tak of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean (Industrial Relations) of the Faculty of Engineering. Mr Alex Wong is Chairman and CEO of King's Flair, while Miss Gigi Wong is Executive Director of the company. The Alex Wong Siu Wah Gigi Wong Fook Chi Endowed Professorship in Product Design Engineering is the 10th endowed professorship since the launch of the Endowed Professorship Scheme in 2012. This endowed professorship represents a recognition of PolyU's achievements in product design engineering. It would help the University advance further afield in the education and research of product design engineering.

The Inauguration of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Foundation cum PolyU Fund-raising Dinner 2014

The Inauguration of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Foundation cum PolyU Fund-raising Dinner 2014 was held on 1 December at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Twenty-two guests joined the inauguration ceremony, including: PolyU Council Chairman Ms Marjorie Yang, PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong, Chairman of the PolyU Foundation and Treasurer of PolyU Dr Patrick Poon, Treasurer of the PolyU Foundation and Chairman of the PolyU Court Professor Roy Chung, Vice Chairman of the PolyU Foundation and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the event Mrs Katherine Ngan, and 17 members of the Governing Committee of the PolyU Foundation. The PolyU Foundation, officially established on 1 July 2014, aimed to support the University’s endeavours in the improvement of facilities and related resources, promotion of research and development, and furthering the all-round development and competitiveness of students. The Fund-raising Dinner was the first major activity organized by the PolyU Foundation. The Fund-raising Dinner owed its success to the generous support of sponsors. They were Premier Sponsor, Prince Jewellery and Watch; Diamond Sponsors, Ms Stella Fung Siu-wan and Dr and Mrs Patrick S. C. Poon, and Gold Sponsors, Regal Hotels and Sa Sa Making Life Beautiful Charity Fund, as well as various Jade Sponsors and Pearl Sponsors. Attention was focused on exquisite artworks, high jewellery and premium wines during the live auction. The auction items were sponsored by Prince Jewellery and Watch, Mr Louis Mak, Miss Cally Kwong, Paragon International Limited, FRANCK MULLER, Mrs Katherine Ngan, Mr Johnny Yeung and Ms Marjorie Yang. The Dinner also featured a mini exhibition of PolyU’s research achievements, and musical performances by different teams of University stakeholders. They included a rock band comprising Professor Tong, students and alumni; a Chinese orchestra formed by a University Court member Dr Raymond Chan and students; and a group of energetic singers from the Youth Committee of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association. It is worth mentioning that the menu of the dinner was specially designed by members of the Organizing Committee as a token of thanks to the guests.

Naming Ceremony of Ho Iu Kwong Building and Ho Iu Kwong and Kwok Pui Chun Square

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a building and a square on its campus respectively after the late Mr Ho Iu Kwong, Founder of the Fook Lee Group of Companies, and Mr Ho Iu Kwong and Ms Kwok Pui Chun in appreciation of the family’s generous contributions to education, social well-being, and PolyU’s teaching and research. At the naming ceremony held on 14 October, Mr Ho Sai Chu, the eldest son and second child of Mr Ho Iu Kwong, officiated at the ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling ceremonies together with his eight siblings, Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU, and Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Foundation. The family members and friends of Mr Ho Iu Kwong and members of the Hong Kong Ho’s Clan Relatives Company Ltd were present at the ceremony. Mr Ho Sai Chu is also Chairman of the Ho Iu Kwong Charity Foundation. In his welcoming address, Prof. Timothy W. Tong commended on the late Mr Ho’s philanthropic spirit and remarkable contributions to the construction of public facilities in Hong Kong, as well as the promotion of Chinese art and culture.  Following in his father’s footsteps, Mr Ho Sai Chu joined the construction industry after he graduated from the Hong Kong Technical College, predecessor of PolyU. Through the Ho Iu Kwong Charity Foundation, Mr Ho Sai Chu and his siblings carry on their parents’ dedication towards Chinese art and culture and education. The seven-storey Ho Iu Kwong Building (Block W) is located in the northern part of the campus, neighbouring the Lee Shau Kee Building (Block Y) and facing the Jockey Club Innovation Tower. The Ho Iu Kwong Building, with a total floor area of 12,600 m2 and various well-equipped facilities, is deservedly the University’s prime facility for training up talents for high-end technological research and industries. The Ho Iu Kwong and Kwok Pui Chun Square (North Court), connecting the Ho Iu Kwong Building and the Jockey Club Auditorium, covers an area of 1,300 m2 and offers a spacious and green environment where students, staff, and visitors can seek respite.

PolyU names lecture theatre after Mr Ngan Pui Ying

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after the world-renowned Chinese manufacturer of diecast replica vehicles Mr Ngan Pui Ying, as a tribute to his distinguished contribution towards education and the development of the University. At the naming ceremony held on 11 September 2014, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed his sincere appreciation to Mr Ngan Pui Ying and Mrs Katherine Ngan, Vice-President of May Cheong Group, member of PolyU Court and Deputy Chairman of the PolyU Foundation, as well as the Ngan family, for their generous donation to PolyU and commitment to philanthropy.

PolyU names lecture theatre after Mr Lam Chik Ho

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after the late Mr Lam Chik Ho (1908 – 1986), as a tribute to his dedication to the promotion of infrastructure, education and medical development in Hong Kong. At a special ceremony recently held on 20 March 2014 on the University campus, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed sincere appreciation to Dr Samuel Lam, son of Mr Lam, and the Lam family for their generous donation to PolyU and commitment to philanthropy.
