Generous donation from outstanding alumnus Ir Dr Otto Poon

Ir Dr Otto Poon, Outstanding PolyU Alumnus and Chairman of ATAL Engineering Group, recently donated HK$2 million to PolyU to support University development. In recognition of his unstinting support, an appreciation plaque would be put up on the façade of the Alumni Atrium, a new facility for alumni activities and networking on campus. At the cheque presentation ceremony held on 8 July 2016, PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong thanked Ir Dr Poon for his generosity as well as his valuable advice given to the University on development issues over the years. Prof. Tong emphasised that support from alumni is crucial to the sustainable development of the University. Located at Core A and spanning across an area of 250m², the Alumni Atrium is a new facility dedicated to the alumni community. It provides a spacious and comfortable environment for leisure, recreation and cultural activities through which alumni can cultivate friendships and foster exchange and partnerships with other stakeholders of the PolyU community. The Alumni Atrium is expected to open by the end of 2016, with the opening being one of the celebratory activities of PolyU’s 80th Anniversary.

PolyU names lecture theatre after Dr Allen Shi Lop Tak

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, Founder and Chairman of Brilliant Group, in recognition of his contribution to the Hong Kong community, as well as his ardent support to the University. At the naming ceremony held on 24 June 2016, Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU Council Chairman, and Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed their sincere appreciation to Dr Allen Shi and Mrs Kimmy Shi for their generous donation to PolyU and commended on their commitment to philanthropy. Members of PolyU Council, Court and the PolyU Foundation Governing Committee, as well as Dr Shi’s family members and friends also attended the ceremony to witness this memorable moment. Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic, the forerunning institution of PolyU, in 1980 and has been supporting his alma mater over the years. Besides his successful business endeavours, Dr Shi has also been dedicated to serving the community and is keen on supporting charity work and youth eductaion. Located at Block Z on campus, the Allen Shi Lop Tak Lecture Theatre has 252 seats with state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment for teaching, seminars and academic workshops.

Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council delegation visits PolyU

Led by the President Dr Jacky Cheung, the delegation of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council (HKYIC) visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 24 May to see the latest development of the University and to exchange views on the development of industries in Hong Kong. The President of PolyU, Professor Timothy W. Tong warmly received the delegation and thanked HKYIC for its staunch support for the University. He looked forward to further collaboration with members of HKYIC and the industrial sector for the development of new technologies that would benefit the industry and the world. Members of the delegation toured the Cleanroom which provides class 100, class 1,000 and class 10,000 environments, the Food Safety and Technology Research Centre, the Aviation Services Research Centre and the Industrial Centre during their visit, and had fruitful discussions with the professors and investigators in charge of the facilities. Apart from the President, other members of the HKYIC delegation included Executive Vice President Mr Zhang Hwo-jie, Vice Presidents Mr Benedict Sin and Mr Alan Cheung, other Executive Committee members and YIC Youth Chapter members.

PolyU receives generous donation from Crystal Group to support Institute of Textiles and Clothing development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has recently received a generous donation of HK$1 million from Crystal Group to support the development of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC). A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 6 May 2016. PolyU Chairman of Council, Mr Chan Tze-ching, BBS, JP (second from the right) and Acting Head of ITC, Prof. Calvin Wong (first from the right) received the cheque from Mr Kenneth Lo, Chairman of Crystal Group (first from the left) and Mr Andrew Lo, CEO of Crystal Group (second from the left) on behalf of the University.

Appreciation Reception for Scholarship and Bursary Donors 2015/16

PolyU held an appreciation reception at the Innovation Think Tank of Jockey Club Innovation Tower on 18 April 2016 to thank donors who set up scholarships and bursaries for students in the academic year 2015/16. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to the donors who had made continued contributions for over two decades. In 2015/16, the University received HK$45 million from around 300 private firms, charitable organizations, professional bodies and individuals for awarding scholarships to high achievers, providing financial assistance to financially needy students, and supporting student activities, benefiting about 2,500 students. While extending his heartfelt gratitude to the donors, President Prof. Timothy W. Tong said that both the donors and the University shared the same expectation of our students that they would become successful professionals and responsible global citizens, and make contribution to society and the world.

PolyU celebrates the establishment of the Ko Jan Ming Endowed Professorship in Sustainable Structures and Materials

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held an appreciation luncheon at Hotel ICON on 1 February 2016 to express its gratitude to the Vantage Charity Foundation Limited for establishing an endowed professorship in sustainable structures and materials. The appointee of the professorship is Professor Teng Jin-guang, Chair Professor of Structural Engineering of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development of PolyU. Ko Jan Ming Endowed Professorship in Sustainable Structures and Materials is the 15th endowed professorship established by PolyU since the launch of the Endowed Professorship Scheme in 2012. Marking the first endowed professorship set up at the Faculty of Construction and Environment, this professorship is a great encouragement to the staff and student of the Faculty, driving them to strive for excellence in education and research in the area of sustainable structures and materials. PolyU HKJMA Invitational Golf Tournament raises funds for student development

The "PolyU HKJMA Invitational Golf Tournament" was held earlier at the Palm Island Resort, Huizhou. PolyU was pleased to have the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association (HKJMA) as the Title Sponsor of this year’s tournament. Over 180 prominent business and community leaders, as well as friends and alumni of PolyU joined the match, of which many were staunch supporters. The tournament raised over HK$1.4 million for supporting student's all-round development. Officiating at the tournament’s Opening Ceremony were Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU Council Chairman, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, Dr Adam Lau, Chairman of the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association, Mr Bob Chong, Honorary Chairman cum Acting Chairman of the tournament’s Organizing Committee, Mr David Ting, Honorary Chairman cum Convenor of the Committee, and five other Honorary Chairmen, namely Dr Dennis Ng, Mr Y. F. Lee, Mr Patrick Luk, Dr K. C. Yip and Mr Peter Lau, the Hon. Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong, HKSAR Representative of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Mr Jimmy Luk, General Manager of Palm Island. Addressing the Ceremony, Prof. Tong thanked the HKJMA and other sponsors, as well as the tournament’s Organizing Committee for making the event a great success. There were three team awards, namely the “Honorary Chairman Cup”, “Industrial & Commerce Cup” and “Company Cup”, and individual awards including “Best Gross Score”, “Best Net Score”, “Alumni Cup” as well as various hole awards. All awards were presented by PolyU Council Chairman Mr Chan, President Prof. Tong and the tournament’s sponsors at a ceremony held on the match day. The PolyU golf tournament was first organized in 2003 and now in its 13th year. Well received by PolyU’s business partners and friends, it has become a signature annual fund-raising event of the University.

PolyU Fund-raising Dinner 2015/16 Raises Funds for Student Development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Fund-raising Dinner 2015/16 was held on 25 January 2016 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. With the theme of "A Legacy to Cherish • A Future to Build", the Dinner brought together over 600 distinguished guests, alumni, staff, friends and supporters of PolyU for a meaningful reunion. The Dinner was kicked off by PolyU Council Chairman Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong, Chairman of the PolyU Foundation Dr Patrick S.C. Poon, Chairman of the PolyU Court and Treasurer of the PolyU Foundation Professor Roy Chung, and Chairman of the Dinner's Organizing Committee Ms Fiona Cheung Sum-yu. Highlights of the Dinner included a sharing session featuring PolyU alumnus and artiste Miss Gigi Leung and a variety of musical performances. They are singing by Ms Fiona Cheung Sum-yu, Guzheng performance by Dr Raymond Chan and Dr Lunlun Zou, Jingqu performance by Mrs Peggy Mak and Mr Hugh Wong, as well as the performance by the President's Band comprising Professor Timothy W. Tong, students and alumni, with immediate past Council Chairman Ms Marjorie Yang, Ir Professor Daniel M. Cheng, Dr Allen Shi and Mr Johnny Yeung Chi-hung. Among the climaxes of the Dinner was a live auction of exquisite artworks, high jewellery and premium wines and items sponsored by Ms Shirley Chan Suk-ling, Miss Cally Kwong, Mrs Nina Lam, Dr and Mrs Samuel Lam, Mr Louis Mak Law-mo, Prince Jewellery & Watch, Seventh Son Restaurant, Mr Irons Sze, Dr Henry Tang Ying-yen and Mrs Cindy Young. A mini exhibition themed "Embarking on a Journey of Innovation and Creativity" was also staged concurrently with the Dinner, which featured a selection of interesting projects, demonstrating how PolyU researchers, graduates and students innovate to build a better future for the world. With its proceeds designated to support student development, the Dinner owed its success to the generous support of sponsors. They were Premier Sponsors Mrs Shirley Chan Pau Shiu-yeng and FANCL, Diamond Sponsor Dr Patrick S.C. Poon and Mrs Wendy Poon, and Gold Sponsors Ms Fiona Cheung Sum-yu and Win Hanverky Holdings Limited, various Jade Sponsors and Pearl Sponsors, as well as the sponsors of Dinner tickets and gifts. The PolyU Foundation was officially established on 1 July 2014. It aims to support the University's endeavours in the improvement of facilities and related resources, promotion of research and development, and enhancement of the all-round development and competitiveness of students. It serves to connect and recognize supporters and friends of the University.

PolyU receives generous gift from a devoted alumnus Mr Wong Tit-shing for 5 consecutive years to support student development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Outstanding Alumnus and Chairman of Jetta Company Limited, Mr Wong Tit-shing, has made a generous donation of HK$2 million for the fifth consecutive year to support student development of the alma mater. A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 25 November 2015. PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong (right) and PolyU Foundation Chairman, Dr Patrick Poon Sun-cheong (left) received the cheque from Mr Wong Tit-shing on behalf of the University. President Tong expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Mr Wong for his keen concern for students’ holistic development. The donation will be used to support Service-Learning projects and to set up Wong Tit-shing Student Exchange Scholarship the same as last year.
