PolyU•Kum Shing Invitational Golf Tournament raises funds for student development

With the generous support of Kum Shing Group, the ‘PolyU•Kum Shing Invitational Golf Tournament’ was held on 5 January 2017 at Mission Hills Golf Club, Dongguan. The tournament, which marked the first fund-raising activity of PolyU in 2017 – a milestone year for PolyU as it celebrates its 80th Anniversary, attracted the participation of more than 200 business elites, community leaders, as well as alumni and supporters of PolyU and raised over HK$1.5 million for student development. Officiating guests of the kick-off ceremony included Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU Council Chairman; Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President; Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of PolyU Foundation; Ir Dr K.K.Wong, Chairman of the tournament’s Organizing Committee (OC) and Group Chairman and CEO of Kum Shing Group; Dr Dennis Ng, Honorary Chairman of the OC and Co-chairman of Golf Tournament Celebration Dinner; other Honorary Chairmen of the OC, including Mr David Ting, Mr Y.F.Lee, Mr Bob Chong, Dr K.C.Yip, Mr Peter Lau, Mr Patrick Luk and Dr Edward Chan; and Mr Tenniel Chu, member of the OC and Co-chairman of the Golf Tournament Celebration Dinner. Also officiating at the ceremony were Professor Frederick Ma, Chairman of MTR Corporation and the Hon. Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong, HKSAR Representative of the National People's Congress. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chan Tze-ching and Professor Tong thanked Kum Shing Group, Mission Hills and other sponsors as well as the tournament’s OC for making the event a great success. The awards of the tournament including team awards: ‘Honorary Chairman Cup’, ‘Industrial & Commerce Cup’ and ‘Company Cup’ as well as individual awards: ‘Best Gross Score’, ‘Best Net Score’, ‘Alumni Cup’, ‘Longest Drive’ and ‘Closest to the Pin’ were presented at the Golf Tournament Celebration Dinner held on the same day.

Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Scholarship Presented to Outstanding Students

Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2016/17 was held on 9 Nov 2016 to honour 16 students, two from each of the eight Faculties of PolyU, for their outstanding academic achievement. "Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Scholarship" was set up in 2013 to pay tribute to the late Deputy Council Chairman and Distinguished Alumnus Ir Dr Ng Tat-lun, for his tremendous contributions to the development of the University as well as his passion for lifelong learning. The Presentation Ceremony was officiated by Mrs Millen Ng and Ms Irene Ng, wife and daughter of Dr Ng Tat-lun, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President and Dr Patrick S.C. Poon, Chairman of the PolyU Foundation. Members of the Governing Committee of the PolyU Foundation, PolyU staff members, students and parents also attended the ceremony to congratulate the scholarship recipients. Addressing the Ceremony, Professor Tong thanked Ms Irene Ng for her recent donation and said, "Dr Ng had a good sense of humour, he always treated others with the utmost respect and honesty and was determined to serve the community. He had a long affiliation with PolyU over the past fifty years, from student to Council member. He was also the founder of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations. Not only had he witnessed the growth of our University, but also made significant contribution to its advancement. With his enthusiasm in pursuing knowledge and his love for our University, he has set a role model for us." In her speech, Ms Irene Ng thanked PolyU again for giving her late father the chance to learn and give back and to fulfill his belief of "Knowledge Changes Fate". Ms Ng called on the scholarship recipients to pay more attention to the people and things around, no matter big or small, and learn from them, to care for and to establish closer ties with other people.

New Territories General Chamber of Commerce visits PolyU

About 40 members of the New Territories General Chamber of Commerce (NTGCC) visited PolyU on 29 September. The delegation, led by NTGCC Chairman, Dr Sam Wong Chun-sing, MH and Honorary President Mr Yuen Mo, GBS, JP, was warmly welcomed by Mr T. C. Chan, Council Chairman of PolyU, Professor Timothy W. Tong, President, Dr Miranda Lou, Vice President (Administration and Business) and Dr Kitty Yam, Associate Vice President (Institutional Advancement). At the welcoming lunch, Dr Sam Wong, acknowledged the many contributions PolyU has been making to the development of the community over the years. He shared Mr Chan and Professor Tong’s views and endorsed PolyU’s initiatives on applied research and education, and in particular, the nurturing of all-round talents with strong sense of social responsibilities. The delegation also paid visit to the House of Innovation, Jockey Club Innovation Tower and Industrial Centre, which enabled NTGCC members to understand more about PolyU’s latest education and research achievements.

PolyU receives repeated generous donation from outstanding alumnus Ir Wong Tit-shing

Outstanding PolyU Alumnus and Chairman of Jetta Company Limited, Ir Wong Tit-shing, has made a generous donation of HK$2 million to support student development for the sixth consecutive year. At the cheque presentation ceremony held on 22 July 2016, PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong thanked Ir Wong for his significant contribution to the University over the years. In recognition of Ir Wong’s staunch support, the “Alumni Common” in the “Alumni Atrium” will be named “Wong Tit Shing Alumni Common”. The “Alumni Atrium” located in Core A and spanning across an area of 250m², is a new facility dedicated to our alumni community. The “Alumni Common” is located on the mezzanine floor and has a contemporary design. It is an ideal place for reading, leisure and other networking activities. The “Alumni Atrium” will be officially opened by the end of 2016. The opening will also be one of the activities marking the commencement of the year-long celebration of the 80th Anniversary of PolyU in 2017.

Generous donation from outstanding alumnus Ir Dr Otto Poon

Ir Dr Otto Poon, Outstanding PolyU Alumnus and Chairman of ATAL Engineering Group, recently donated HK$2 million to PolyU to support University development. In recognition of his unstinting support, an appreciation plaque would be put up on the façade of the Alumni Atrium, a new facility for alumni activities and networking on campus. At the cheque presentation ceremony held on 8 July 2016, PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong thanked Ir Dr Poon for his generosity as well as his valuable advice given to the University on development issues over the years. Prof. Tong emphasised that support from alumni is crucial to the sustainable development of the University. Located at Core A and spanning across an area of 250m², the Alumni Atrium is a new facility dedicated to the alumni community. It provides a spacious and comfortable environment for leisure, recreation and cultural activities through which alumni can cultivate friendships and foster exchange and partnerships with other stakeholders of the PolyU community. The Alumni Atrium is expected to open by the end of 2016, with the opening being one of the celebratory activities of PolyU’s 80th Anniversary.

PolyU names lecture theatre after Dr Allen Shi Lop Tak

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, Founder and Chairman of Brilliant Group, in recognition of his contribution to the Hong Kong community, as well as his ardent support to the University. At the naming ceremony held on 24 June 2016, Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU Council Chairman, and Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed their sincere appreciation to Dr Allen Shi and Mrs Kimmy Shi for their generous donation to PolyU and commended on their commitment to philanthropy. Members of PolyU Council, Court and the PolyU Foundation Governing Committee, as well as Dr Shi’s family members and friends also attended the ceremony to witness this memorable moment. Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic, the forerunning institution of PolyU, in 1980 and has been supporting his alma mater over the years. Besides his successful business endeavours, Dr Shi has also been dedicated to serving the community and is keen on supporting charity work and youth eductaion. Located at Block Z on campus, the Allen Shi Lop Tak Lecture Theatre has 252 seats with state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment for teaching, seminars and academic workshops.

Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council delegation visits PolyU

Led by the President Dr Jacky Cheung, the delegation of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council (HKYIC) visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 24 May to see the latest development of the University and to exchange views on the development of industries in Hong Kong. The President of PolyU, Professor Timothy W. Tong warmly received the delegation and thanked HKYIC for its staunch support for the University. He looked forward to further collaboration with members of HKYIC and the industrial sector for the development of new technologies that would benefit the industry and the world. Members of the delegation toured the Cleanroom which provides class 100, class 1,000 and class 10,000 environments, the Food Safety and Technology Research Centre, the Aviation Services Research Centre and the Industrial Centre during their visit, and had fruitful discussions with the professors and investigators in charge of the facilities. Apart from the President, other members of the HKYIC delegation included Executive Vice President Mr Zhang Hwo-jie, Vice Presidents Mr Benedict Sin and Mr Alan Cheung, other Executive Committee members and YIC Youth Chapter members.

PolyU receives generous donation from Crystal Group to support Institute of Textiles and Clothing development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has recently received a generous donation of HK$1 million from Crystal Group to support the development of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC). A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 6 May 2016. PolyU Chairman of Council, Mr Chan Tze-ching, BBS, JP (second from the right) and Acting Head of ITC, Prof. Calvin Wong (first from the right) received the cheque from Mr Kenneth Lo, Chairman of Crystal Group (first from the left) and Mr Andrew Lo, CEO of Crystal Group (second from the left) on behalf of the University.

Appreciation Reception for Scholarship and Bursary Donors 2015/16

PolyU held an appreciation reception at the Innovation Think Tank of Jockey Club Innovation Tower on 18 April 2016 to thank donors who set up scholarships and bursaries for students in the academic year 2015/16. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to the donors who had made continued contributions for over two decades. In 2015/16, the University received HK$45 million from around 300 private firms, charitable organizations, professional bodies and individuals for awarding scholarships to high achievers, providing financial assistance to financially needy students, and supporting student activities, benefiting about 2,500 students. While extending his heartfelt gratitude to the donors, President Prof. Timothy W. Tong said that both the donors and the University shared the same expectation of our students that they would become successful professionals and responsible global citizens, and make contribution to society and the world.

A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 14 March 2016. PolyU President Prof. Timothy W.
