Ultrasound technology, which uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body, is known for its key benefits of being safe, non-invasive and providing real-time imaging. In this modern era, many of us have experienced medical diagnosis and treatment through ultrasound, from the earliest days in our mothers’ wombs with foetal ultrasounds.

In fact, given its affordability, portability, and high efficiency, ultrasound has great potential for wide applications in different stages of our lives. Ir Professor Zheng Yongping, Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering and his research team at PolyU, are at the forefront of developing innovative devices and solutions harnessing ultrasound technology. Their years of dedicated efforts have yielded breakthroughs with the potential to vastly improve the health of millions worldwide.

For instance, Scolioscan, an innovative device employing 3D ultrasound imaging technology, offers a new approach to scoliosis assessments. This radiation-free and cost-effective method facilitates early and better intervention for spinal deformities, particularly in paediatric cases. Scolioscan has been successfully commercialised and is being used in multiple countries around the globe.

Another novel invention is Liverscan, a portable device for liver fibrosis and fatty liver assessment that utilises a PolyU-patented ultrasound stiffness measurement technique.  The technology marks a major step in promoting the precise prevention and effective diagnosis of liver diseases. The device has already been installed in Hong Kong hospitals for clinical uses, and medical device registrations are being processed in China NMPA and USA FDA.

Professor Zheng believes that biomedical engineering can help people maintain health and enjoy a happier life. Driven by this vision, he steers his research team towards creating devices for various health needs, for example, a portable 3D ultrasound system for brain and carotid artery imaging, pivotal for stroke risk assessment. They also have plans to develop ultrasound solutions targeting breast cancer assessment, osteoarthritis screening, and diseases related to the central nervous system.

Donors’ support plays a crucial role in boosting the momentum of our research. PolyU has received generous support from Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation, epitomised by the establishment of the Henry G. Leong Endowed Professorship in Biomedical Engineering and the appointment of Professor Zheng as Henry G. Leong Professor in Biomedical Engineering. Professor Zheng was grateful to the donor for bolstering his vision and research pursuits.

Dr Edwin Leong, Chairman and Founder of Tai Hung Fai Charitable Foundation said,

I am pleased to see that PolyU’s research efforts align with my chief concern for healthcare services in society and drive home the importance of disease prevention, community health and affordability.

As ultrasound technologies continue to develop, it will significantly expand the diagnostic and monitoring capabilities in medical applications. You can also take part in making transformative changes in medical practice by supporting PolyU’s research via the Endowed Professorship Scheme (EPS). EPS is not only a significant recognition bestowed upon our outstanding talent but also a sustainable way to secure ongoing funding support for Endowed Professors who can take advantage of the extra resources to continue their pioneer research. Please see here for more details.
