Five PolyU Science Scholars recognised as Highly Cited Researchers 2022 by Clarivate

Dr Huang Bolong and Dr Yu Ka-ming Iris of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, Prof. Loh Kian-ping, Prof. Wu Tao and Prof. Yan Feng of the Department of Applied Physics are named in the list of Highly Cited Researchers 2022 by Clarivate for their significant research impact, reflected in their publication of multiple papers that have been frequently cited by fellow academics. The list identifies the world’s most influential researchers, determined by the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science citation index over the last decade. Prof. Chen Xiaojun and Prof. Wang Zhian received research grant from the NSFC/ RGC Joint Research Scheme

Congratulations to Chair Professor Chen Xiaojun and Professor Wang Zhian who have received the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)/Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme (JRS) to support their research proposals jointly submitted with researchers in the Mainland China. Professors Chen and Wang will receive HKD1,244,750 from RGC, respectively. A total of 453 proposals are submitted to the Scheme this year. 8 out of the 40 successful projects are from PolyU’s researchers, including 2 projects from Professors Chen and Wang of the Department of Applied Mathematics: Professor Chen Xiaojun Mainland Principal Investigator/ Institution Prof Xinmin Yang / Chongqing Normal University Project title Stochastic Multiobjective Optimization and Applications Professor Wang Zhian Mainland Principal Investigator/ Institution Professor Yuan Lou, Shanghai Jiaotong University Project title Mathematical Modeling and Analysis on the Predator-mediated Competitions and their Biological Consequences About NSFC/ RGC Joint Research Scheme The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) / Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme (JRS) aims to promote collaboration between researchers/research teams in Hong Kong and the Mainland on the basis of complementing the existing strengths of both sides. The NSFC/RGC JRS supports research proposals jointly submitted by the Mainland and the Hong Kong researchers. It also offers up to two conference grants to sponsor conferences held in Hong Kong. Prof. Chen Xiaojun conferred Fellow of the American Mathematical Society 2023

Congratulations to Prof. Chen Xiaojun, Chair Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics, for being conferred as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society 2023 in recognition of her contributions to mathematical optimization, stochastic variational inequalities, and the analysis of non-differentiable functions. Founded in 1888, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is the most influential mathematical society in the world. AMS is dedicated to advancing mathematical education and research, connecting the diverse global mathematical community, and fostering an awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.

Prof. Tsang Shik-chi Edman bestowed the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement

Congratulations to Prof. Tsang Shik-chi, Edman, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Director of Wolfson Catalysis Centre, University of Oxford, on receiving the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement. Twenty-one PolyU Science members are ranked as the World’s Top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University.  Using the Scopus author profiles as of 1 Sep 2022, Stanford University released the latest top 2% scientists in various scientific fields. Prof. Hao Jianhua secures key program funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China

Congratulations to Prof. Hao Jianhua, Chair Professor of Materials Physics and Devices in the Department of Applied Physics for securing Key Program Funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In this project, Prof. Hao's team will collaborate with researchers from Nankai University and Sichuan Normal University to address the key scientific issue of achieving a multi-mode neuromorphic device and break the barrier of neuromorphic computing restricted by the limited working mode through developing novel materials and devices.

Dr Wong Ka-hing conferred Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials

Congratulations to Dr Wong Ka-hing of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology for being conferred as Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) and receiving the IAAM Scientist Award for his contribution to applications of nanotechnology. IAAM is a renowned non-profit international scientific research organization aiming to promote advanced materials research. Fellow of IAAM is a notable distinction that recognizes researchers’ significant contributions and efforts in advance materials.

Prof. Raymond Wong has been bestowed successive endowed professorship - the Clarea Au Professor in Energy

The Clarea Au Endowed Professorship in Energy has been bestowed on Prof. Raymond Wong, Dean of the Faculty of Science, at the Fourth Inauguration of Endowed Professorships cum the First Inauguration of Endowed Young Scholars held on 31 August 2022. The Endowed Professorship Scheme was introduced in 2021 to recognise distinguished academics and their remarkable achievements. The Scheme provides funding and support to help the appointed professors strive for excellence in their respective disciplines. The successive Endowed Professorship will further strengthen Prof. Wong’s research in developing new molecular and nano materials for energy conversion (light/electrical and thermal/electrical). Prof. Raymond Wong is currently Chair Professor of Chemical Technology at the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology of PolyU. Prof. Wong finds great interest in the design and synthesis of new molecular functional materials and metallopolymers with photo-functional properties and energy functions, with his scope of work ranging from innovative research to application studies. Currently, his team is working on sustainable energy sources and improving energy conversion technologies to meet the world’s future energy demand and work towards a cleaner environment. Prof. Wong has published more than 800 research papers in leading international scientific journals and is among the world’s top 1% on the Institute for Scientific Information list of most-cited chemists and materials scientists. He was named one of the Highly Cited Researchers for seven consecutive years (2014–2020) by Thomson Reuters, now known as Clarivate. Prof. Wong was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2005 and was a Founding Member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences. Being the first Chinese scientist presented with the RSC Chemistry of the Transition Metals Award, he was decorated with countless international and national awards, including the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship, the Natural Science Award (First Class) of the Ministry of Education, the FACS Distinguished Young Chemist Award, the JPA Lectureship Award for Asian and Oceanian Photochemist, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation, the State Natural Science Award (Second Class), and the RGC (Research Grants Council) Senior Research Fellow Award, among others. Prof. Sun Defeng awarded the RGC Senior Research Fellow 2022/23

Prof. Sun Defeng, Chair Professor of Applied Optimization and Operations Research and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics, has been bestowed with the RGC Senior Research Fellow 2022/23 in recognition of his distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to the higher education sector. Prof. Sun will receive a fellowship grant of around HK$7.8 million for a period of 60 months. We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Prof. Sun for his dedicated efforts in pursuing research excellence.
