PolyU Science students win gold medal in iGEM Competition 2024

Following last year's success in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGem) competition, a new student team of 10 undergraduates from the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, and 1 from Electronic Engineering with Finance, “PanoPOLY”, made a great breakthrough this year in October in Paris to win our first GOLD medal. More thrillingly, PanoPOLY was selected as the Top 10 undergraduate team alongside hundreds of global top universities, with TWO nominations for the Best Oncology Project and Best New Composite Part. Under the guidance of the supervisory team (Prof. Terence Lee, Dr Clarence Wong, Dr Kevin Mu, Dr Chartia Cheung, Dr Waiting Wong, Dr Alan Lee and Dr Clare Yan), the innovative idea of creating a novel dual-targeting nanobody, “Panobody” was successfully proven to improve treatment in gemcitabine-resistant pancreatic cancer cells by our student team. The novelty in Panobody design, which brings a new hope to pancreatic cancer treatment, together with the interactive educational board game PANOPOLY, had highly impressed the judges and audience during Jamboree. We are proud of nurturing a group of young biotechnologists who are going to shine brightly in the biotechnology field in Hong Kong and worldwide by introducing more innovative solutions for humans' healthcare. Top 2% Scientists Worldwide 2024 by Stanford University

Forty PolyU Science members are ranked as the World’s Top 2% most-cited scientists 2024 by Stanford University.  Using the Scopus author profiles as of 16 September 2024, Stanford University released the latest top 2% scientists in various scientific fields. The list was prepared by Prof. John Ioannidis and his team from Stanford University, the updated database (version 7) provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted Prof. Chai Yang named one of the top 10 in the Engineering & Technology category for the Falling Walls Global Call 2024

He is invited to compete for the Science Breakthrough of the Year 2024. Prof. Chai is focusing on breaking through the significant energy efficiency limitations that currently constrain sensory AI systems. His pioneering research develops novel hardware architectures and optimization techniques, enabling the deployment of advanced sensory AI systems in mobile devices, IoT sensors, and edge computing, transforming applications in smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation. Dr Kathy Leng Kai awarded Asian Young Scientist Fellowship 2024

Congratulations to Dr Kathy Leng Kai, Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Physics, for being awarded a prestigious 2024 Asian Young Scientist Fellowship (AYSF), in recognition of her groundbreaking work in molecularly thin two-dimensional hybrid perovskites. The AYSF aims to encourage and support talented young scientists in Asia to carry out creative and transformative research in three fields: “Life Science,” “Physical Science,” and “Mathematics and Computer Science.” The Fellowship is awarded annually to 12 recipients selected from Asia after a rigorous selection process. A total grant of USD100,000 is disbursed to each Fellow’s home institution over two consecutive years to support their research endeavors. Our warmest congratulations again to Dr Leng! Prof. Liu has published 150 papers, which have garnered over 7000 citations, and the filing of 10 patents. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Prof. Liu has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2011) and a Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society (2020). He has also been nominated for the prestigious 2023 Chinese Academician election. His accolades include the 100 Talent Program Awards of CAS (2005), the First CCS-RSC Young Scientist Award (2009), the 7th CCS-BASF Youth Innovation Prize (2014), and the Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professorship (2016). Prof. Liu has played a significant role in the academic community, serving as an editor or deputy editor for several esteemed journals. His leadership and influence have also been instrumental in nominating PolyU colleagues for fellowship in professional bodies, including the FRSC and FCCS.      Mr Chen Chun Wai, Dave  Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Mr Dave Chen graduated from PolyU with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics in 2001. He is currently the Head of Information Technology at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, advocating for the adoption of Enterprise, Digital, Cloud, Security, AI, and Big Data Architecture. With over 20 years of experience in IT management and consultancy, Mr Chen has established himself as a leader in the industry and received the "World CIO 200 Award" in the "Legend Category" from the Global CIO Forum in 2023 and the "Leadership Award in Open Architecture Standard" from the Open Group in 2024. He is also a strong supporter of PolyU, contributing to the university in various capacities. He served as speaker for career talks and master’s program, and he also participated in video interviews, departmental reviews and the PolyU Inspire Mentorship program.     Prof. Hu Shenglong Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Prof. Hu Shenglong obtained his PhD degree in Mathematics from PolyU in 2013. He is now a Professor at the Hangzhou Dianzi University. Prof. Hu is devoted to mathematical optimisation research, with a particular focus on tensor computation. He has published 60 papers in top-tier journals, such as Mathematical Programming, Numerische Mathematik, SIAM Journal, etc., and garnered over 1300 citations. In view of his outstanding achievement in the field, he received prestigious awards, including the Zhejiang Provincial Mathematical Society Research Achievement Prize (2021), the Science China-Math Best Paper Prize (2017), the Tianjin Mathematical Society Youth Research Prize (2017). His research excellence has also been supported by four grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).     Prof. Zhang Kai Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Science  Prof. Zhang Kai graduated from PolyU with a PhD degree in Physics in 2011. Currently, he serves as a Professor at the Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics (SINANO), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Zhang's research focuses on the creation and application of terahertz optoelectronic devices, his innovative work has led to the publication of over 100 papers in prestigious journals, including Nature Materials, Nature Communications, and Advanced Materials, etc. In recognition of his research endeavours, Prof. Zhang has received multiple awards, including the Wiley China Open Science High Contribution Author award in 2023, the NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars award in 2023, and the NSFC Outstanding Young Scholars award in 2019. Additionally, he was honored with the First Prize of the Innovation Award of the Invention and Entrepreneurship Award in 2022, the Springer Nature’s Nano Research 45 Young Innovators Award in 2021, and the Top Ten Research Progress Nomination Award of the Journal of Semiconductors in 2020.     Congratulations to all the awardees! 

Prof. Wong Ka-hing awarded the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service

Congratulations to Prof. Wong Ka-hing, Professor of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Director of the Research Institute for Future Food and Member of the Management Committee of PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research, for being awarded the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service. Dr Tian and Dr Chen have made significant strides in their respective fields with research focusing on the " Design and development of novel nano-porous materials with enhanced hydrogen storage and delivery capacity" and "Novel computing devices for low-power artificial intelligence of things". This prestigious award is a testament to their exceptional research performance and their substantial contributions to the advancement of technology. PolyU Science wins prestigious awards at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

We are thrilled to share that our Innovations won six prestigious awards at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, securing 4 Gold Medals,1 Silver Medal, and 1 Bronze Medal. These significant, award-winning innovations are a testament to our commitment to tackling challenges in the areas of the environment, health, and renewable energy. The accolades were awarded for a range of groundbreaking technologies, including microbial contamination and pollutants on-site detection device, 3D Bone Scaffolds for enhancing bone regeneration, an innovative vitamin D supplement, novel peptidomimetics aimed at cancer treatment, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) hat that limit dementia progression, and flexible perovskite solar modules. Prof. Yang Tong awarded the Kuok Group Endowed Professorship in Mathematical Science

Faculty extends our warmest congratulations to Prof. Yang Tong, Chair Professor of Mathematical Science from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Director of the Research Centre for Nonlinear Analysis, on the prestigious recognition of being awarded the Kuok Group Endowed Professorship in Mathematical Science. The Endowed Professorship stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements of outstanding scholars at PolyU, honoring their substantial contributions to academia and research. Through the generous support of donors, the Endowed Professors are provided with additional resources, empowering them to excel even further in their research and educational endeavors. Professor Yang Tong joined the Department of Applied Mathematics at PolyU in 2022. He has been working in the fields of partial differential equations and kinetic theory. He served as an Editor-in-Chief of Analysis and Applications from 2013 to 2017, and is one of the founding Editors-in-Chief of Kinetic and Related Models launched in 2008. He also serves on several international journals, including the Editorial Advisory Board of London Mathematical Society: Bulletin, Journal, and the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. Professor Yang has been actively contributing to the research and scientific development in mainland China. He is an Honorary Professor, Visiting Chair Professor and Guest Professor of several universities in mainland China. He was elected to be a Foreign Member of the European Academy of Sciences and a member of The World Academy of Sciences in 2018 and 2021, respectively, a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in 2022, and a member of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 2021. The awards and distinctions that he has received include the Senior Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2020, the 2nd class State Natural Science Award of China in 2012, the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2011, the Changjiang Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of China in 2005, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2004, and the Morningside Silver Medal of Mathematics in the first ICCM in 1998.
