It is FHSS’s deep regret to learn of the recent passing of Prof. Michel Millodot, Emeritus Professor of Optometry, former Dean of FHSS and former Head of the predecessor of SO.
Having already pioneered the development of optometry as an academic discipline in the UK and known for his encouragement of overseas students to help develop the optometric profession and education in their home countries, Prof. Millodot joined the then Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1990 as Head of the then Department of Diagnostic Sciences.
A visionary leader, Prof. Millodot proceeded to build upon the Department’s earlier triumph of securing validation for its undergraduate degree programme by strengthening its capacities for offering postgraduate studies and conducting research. He also pushed for legislative recognition of optometry as a registered health profession.
Prof. Millodot was promoted from the headship to the deanship of FHSS in 1995. As Dean, he helped achieve recognition of the Faculty’s academic programmes by overseas institutions. Upon his retirement in 1996, Prof. Millodot was appointed as Emeritus Professor of Optometry by PolyU.
Prof. Millodot has left a lasting legacy on SO and FHSS and in the profession of optometry in Hong Kong. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
