Prof. SUN Xin
Department of Language Science and Technology
Assistant Professor
Prof. Sun is a developmental and educational psychologist who conducts research on the behavioural and neural basis for language and reading acquisition in children with bilingual experiences. Her work also looks at the role of culture in shaping individuals' intuitive beliefs about learning (i.e., beliefs about intelligence, language learning, and broadly, beliefs about the mind and brain). Prof. Sun’s work has been published in impactful journals, including Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Child Development, Developmental Science, npj Science of Learning, and Human Brain Mapping. Prof. Sun is committed to leveraging psychology, education, and language science to understand the heterogeneity of neurocognitive profiles among children from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Her work aims to integrate brain sciences into research and applications to benefit young learners, parents, and educational practitioners.
Prof. WANG Shaonan
Department of Language Science and Technology
Assistant Professor
Prof. Wang’s research spans three interconnected areas. First, she builds BabyLLM from scratch using multimodal data and social interaction cues to study language acquisition, combined with fMRI, MEG, and iEEG to track how the brain encodes and composes meaning across development. Second, she develops brain decoding methods using multimodal neuroimaging to infer mental content, with applications to assistive communication for individuals with severe speech and motor impairments. Third, she integrates evidence-based educational protocols into AI language-learning agents for preschoolers, creating interactive systems that support early vocabulary, narrative skills, and concept learning in naturalistic settings.
