PolyU Young Historian Competition 2025

Highlights

The PolyU Young Historian Competition, organised by the Department of Chinese History and Culture, successfully concluded with its award presentation ceremony on 22 November 2025. This initiative aims to deepen students' in-depth understanding and interest in the diverse fields and topics of Chinese history and culture through thematic essay writing. It also provides students with a distinctive learning experience under the guidance of expert scholars.

This year's competition centred on the theme ‘Telling History from a Maritime Perspective: China, the World, and Their Multifaceted Interactions’ and, for the first time, introduced a ‘Non-Local Section’ to foster academic exchange and mutual inspiration between teachers and students from Hong Kong and overseas. A total of 147 teams, comprising over 600 teachers and students from 78 secondary schools, participated. Additionally, 29 teams from more than ten provinces and municipalities across China – including Shanghai, Dalian, Wuxi, Zhengzhou, Qinghai, Anhui, and Macau – as well as international teams from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, contributed 163 non-local participants.

The award presentation ceremony was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Han Xiaorong, Head of the Department of Chinese History and Culture, delivered the welcome address. Award presenters included Mr Lee Kin-wan, Principal Education Officer (Curriculum Development)1 of the Education Bureau; Prof. Ricardo Mak,MH, Director of Public Examinations at the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority; Dr Louis Ng, Director of the Hong Kong Palace Museum; and Prof. Liu Shuyong, Deputy Chief Editor of Hong Kong Chronicles Institute.
