From PolyU ENGL to Oxford Linguistics: Alumna Dr Amy Xu Inspires Students
Dr Amy Xu, a 2016 graduate of the Department of English and Communication’s (ENGL) BA in English Studies for the Professions programme, delivered an alumni talk titled 'From PolyU ENGL to Oxford Linguistics' on 12 November 2025. Jointly organised by the Faculty of Humanities (FH), ENGL, and the Department of English Alumni Association (DEAA), the talk attracted around students, staff, and alumni.
Amy shared her inspiring academic journey, reflecting on the student-led projects she initiated and led at PolyU, as well as her exchange experience in the United States. These formative experiences sparked her interest in linguistics and motivated her to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. She also offered insights into her current research and life as an early-career academic.
Amy’s achievements serve as a powerful example of how students can leverage an English major to pursue diverse and promising academic and professional pathways, inspiring current students to explore opportunities beyond the classroom.
