On Sundays We Play – Film Screening and Photo Exhibit Supporting Migrant Domestic Workers
Documenting ‘game day’ among hundreds of migrant domestic workers in Singapore, the two-day On Sundays, We Play event on 13 – 14 April 2025 featured a photo exhibit, documentary film screening, and post-screening discussion co-hosted by the ENGL and Women in Sports Empowered. This work showcased an Australian Research Council project conducted by Dr Kristine Aquino (University of Technology Sydney) and Prof. Selvaraj Velayutham (Macquarie University), both of whom participated in the event. By focusing on migrant domestic workers engaged in social volleyball leagues, the photos and film demonstrated the capacity for informal sports to strengthen social networks and provide spaces for free expression among some of society’s most marginalised, advancing the aims of the department’s Migrant Lives Matter Series. The audience for the Sunday event included NGO staff and migrant domestic workers, including a local migrant domestic worker volleyball team. In attendance during the Monday event were NGO staff, Philippine Consular staff, and academic researchers.
