Future-Ready English: Dr Marshall Yin Demonstrates AI-Powered Teaching at NUS Symposium

Events

From 21-23 May 2025, the National University of Singapore held their 7th CELC Symposium (Centre for English Language and Communication) with the theme of "Gearing Up Future-ready Learners: Rethinking Perspectives in English Language and Communication Teaching in Higher Education." At this international symposium, on 21 May 2025 Dr Marshall Warren Yin, ELC Instructor, conducted a teaching demonstration that focused on "Modelling ChatGPT for Language Learning - Prompting, Interaction, Best Practices." Dr Yin's talk was based on the 2024-2025 academic year of developing AI and language learning in the English for Science classes run by the ELC and workshops held in the ELC's CILL (Centre for Independent Language Learning). This aligns with PolyU's vision of pioneering ways to use AI in directed and self-directed language learning. In his session, Dr Yin highlighted ways students can be taught how to effectively prompt ChatGPT for greater efficiency, effectiveness, and fun in language learning, particularly for vocabulary, writing, and grammar enhancement.
