TEMI, the 1st AI Service Robot in CILL

Events

The CILL robot project, which aims to realise the benefits of AI technology in language education and facilitate independent learning, was launched in Summer 2020. TEMI, the humanoid and programmable robot, is in its full operation now in the ELC’s Centre for Independent Language Learning. Taking advantage of 5G, 3D mapping and Natural Language Processing empowered by Google, the robot currently functions as a tour guide for the centre and an information centre that recommends relevant ELC courses, workshops and study programmes in response to students’ enquiries about learning English.

“TEMI provides an advanced platform for learners to pursue self-regulated learning which is the primary aim of CILL”, stated Vincent Sheung Kwun, the project leader who proposed the initiative in 2018. “This project involves rethinking our mode of delivery while there is a shortage of human resources in the time of the pandemic outbreak.”

With the adoption of AI, which is progressively becoming part of education, language education can usher in the next era of AI-augmented learning. TEMI is an interesting interface for knowledge that could improve motivation, help to keep the promise of a high-tech future alive, and make pedagogical topics and learning attractive. It is with high hopes that the robot project will enable educators to see the early face of future teaching and learning that the ELC is investigating the use of AI, which could broaden the modes of delivery of our teaching.
