Eligibility

All students taking the CLC1104 University Chinese course are eligible to enroll in the Online Putonghua Course and take the assessment. Students taking CLC1104 in Semester 1 of the 2026/27 academic year should log in to Canvas; students who took CLC1104 in previous semesters should log in to Blackboard. 

Assessment Components

The Online Putonghua Assessment consists of two parts:
1. A comprehensive assessment under the "Assessment" tab of the Blackboard or Canvas course e-Learning Course in Putonghua, accounting for 20% of the total score;
2. Online oral assessment, accounting for 80% of the total score.

Assessment Format

1. Part 1: Comprehensive Assessment
Once the Online Putonghua Course is accessible, students may complete the comprehensive assessment via the "Assessment" tab within the assessment period. Two sets of questions are available for this assessment; students must select and complete one set within the designated window, which takes approximately 10 minutes to finish.
If a student completes both sets of questions, the higher score will be adopted as the final mark for the comprehensive assessment component.

2. Part 2: Online Oral Assessment
This assessment is offered twice per academic year, usually towards the end of each semester. Please check your email for registration updates. Registered students must finish the comprehensive assessment first to qualify for the online oral assessment.
During the oral assessment, students are required to speak and record audio via a computer. The assessment is fully online. Appropriate equipment is required (a microphone is recommended for better recording quality). For optimal recording performance, students are advised to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on a desktop or laptop PC. The entire oral assessment takes roughly 10 minutes.
