Reason for Pursuing a Doctorate Programme

Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in promoting BIM adoption, digital transformation, and professional development. These experiences have shown me that the industry needs stronger research foundations to measure, justify, and maximise the value of digital technologies.

Therefore, I am pursuing a doctorate programme to deepen my knowledge, strengthen my research capabilities, and contribute more meaningfully to the engineering and BIM industries.

My research interest is to explore how BIM data can be assessed as a valuable digital asset, supporting better decision-making, investment appraisal, and smarter project delivery. I also hope to bridge industry practice and academic research, using my experience to develop practical outcomes that benefit the construction industry.

Why do you choose PolyU DIREC Programme

I chose the PolyU DIREC programme because it closely matches my career development goals and future aspirations. My previous career and work have mainly focused on technical practice, BIM, digital innovation, and engineering applications. I now wish to extend my exposure to the wider real estate and construction industry, including investment, development, management, policy, and strategic decision-making.

The DIREC programme is particularly suitable for me because its course content connects real estate knowledge with construction, technology, sustainability, and industry transformation. I believe it can broaden my professional perspective beyond technical delivery and help me better understand how projects create long-term economic, social, and asset value.

With my background in BIM and innovation, I hope to combine my practical experience with the interdisciplinary knowledge gained from PolyU. This will support my future development as a more well-rounded industry leader who can contribute to both technological advancement and real estate development.

Overall Learning from Studying DIREC Programme

My overall learning experience from studying the DIREC programme has been highly inspiring and different from my previous learning experience. At doctoral level, learning is not only based on direct teaching, but more importantly on inspiration, critical thinking, and independent enquiry. I was given academic materials and guidance, then expected to explore the subject through literature review, self-study, problem analysis, assignment writing, and presentation of my own ideas.

This learning process has strengthened my ability to think independently, evaluate different viewpoints, and connect academic theories with real industry challenges. It has also encouraged me to reflect on my professional experience in BIM, engineering, and innovation from a broader real estate and construction perspective.

Through the DIREC programme, I have developed stronger research awareness, analytical skills, and confidence in presenting evidence-based arguments. Overall, the programme has broadened my vision and helped me grow from a technical professional into a more reflective and research-oriented industry leader.

Outcomes/Expectations from Studying DIREC Programme

From studying the DIREC programme, I expect to strengthen my academic research capability, including literature review, critical analysis, research methodology, and evidence-based writing. I hope to develop the confidence and discipline required to conduct doctoral-level research that can contribute to both academic knowledge and industry practice.

I also expect to build a more well-rounded set of skills in the real estate and construction industry, covering management, finance, technical knowledge, innovation, sustainability, and strategic decision-making. This will allow me to evaluate projects from broader business, asset, and societal perspectives.

In addition, I look forward to joining the PolyU BRE network. I understand that PolyU BRE has produced many outstanding alumni, including the Chief Executive, senior management leaders, and industry elites. Through this network, I hope to exchange ideas, broaden my vision, and contribute actively to the future development of the industry.

Advice for Prospective Candidates

My advice to prospective candidates is to keep learning and be prepared for continuous change. The world is changing rapidly, especially in the AI era. New technologies can emerge and reshape industries within only a few months, so it is necessary for professionals to equip themselves with stronger knowledge, wider vision, and better research capability.

Postgraduate and doctoral learning is different from traditional classroom training. It is not only about receiving knowledge from lecturers, but also about developing the ability to study independently, conduct literature reviews, analyse complex problems, and perform academic research with discipline and confidence.

The DIREC programme provides a valuable platform for professional growth. It allows candidates to learn together with passionate, experienced, and elite professionals from the real estate and construction industry. I would strongly encourage those who want to upgrade themselves, expand their network, and prepare for future industry transformation to join DIREC.
