Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Our mission is to educate young people to pursue professional careers in nursing, one of the world’s most “caring” professions. This innovative academic programme develops students’ competency in delivering quality care, carrying out relevant research, and making significant contributions to the health of the community.

Students master skills in clinical reasoning, communication, and the use of technology. They also learn how to work efficiently alone and with other healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare.

Programme Characteristics

PolyU was the first university in Hong Kong to provide a pre-registration degree programme in nursing. Our innovative approaches to learning and teaching enhance our students’ critical thinking and clinical decision making skills, and our graduates are both leaders in the nursing profession and responsible global citizens.

Our state-of-the-art facilities include Nursing Therapeutics Laboratories modelled on real clinical wards, specialised laboratories with simulation facilities for Mental Health, Gerontological, Emergency, Maternity, and Paediatric Nursing, the Dorothy Wong Intensive Care Laboratory, and the Yuen Yuen Institute Chinese Medicinal Nursing Laboratory. The School also hosts the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services and utilises innovative technologies, including the Virtual Hospital, to further enrich students’ learning experience.

Field practice is arranged in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, old age homes, day care centres, and other community centres. We also offer a wide range of overseas student exchange programmes. To obtain properly balanced and comprehensive clinical experiences, students have opportunities to adapt to a variety of practicum locations, environments and rotating work schedules.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme is accredited by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, and graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Nurses (General).

Career Prospects

Graduates are eligible to become Registered Nurses (General) in Hong Kong. They can find employment in numerous clinical and community settings or further pursue specialist areas of study.

The majority of graduates work in the health sector, either under the Hospital Authority or in private organisations such as private hospitals or old age homes. Some graduates undertake research work.

Other graduates pursue further studies. Many enrol in post-registration clinical training and education at local and overseas institutions.

Student Message

PolyU's School of Nursing is the first higher education institute in Hong Kong to offer bachelor’s degree programmes for both post-registration nurses and undergraduates. Throughout my studies, I have benefited from the guidance of dedicated teachers who are committed to developing our clinical competence, critical thinking, and professional capabilities, preparing us for the challenges of a future nursing career. What I value most is their openness to students' perspectives and their willingness to continuously enhance our learning experience.

The School provides state-of-the-art laboratories and learning facilities, allowing students to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment. Through advanced simulation technologies and virtual reality systems, we can practise patient care, strengthen our clinical decision-making, and learn how to respond effectively to unexpected situations before entering real healthcare settings.

For two years running, 2025 and 2026, the School has been ranked among the top 20 worldwide. I believe that this success is achieved through the School’s innovative resources, dedicated teachers, and provision of hands-on learning opportunities. I am proud to be part of the PolyU School of Nursing.

Chan Sean Enoch

To enhance our learning outcomes and readiness for real-world nursing practice, the School has integrated advanced technologies, experiential learning, and multidisciplinary approaches to provide us with innovative clinical learning experiences. Learning through the School’s Virtual Hospital and simulation training is amazing.  The Virtual Hospital enables us to immerse ourselves in realistic clinical environments and take on the role of nurses to manage multiple events, prioritise nursing tasks, and apply problem-solving and communication skills. Simulation training further exposes us to diverse patient scenarios, enhancing our decision-making and ability to respond to emergencies before our placement.

I am grateful to my teachers for who have guided me throughout this journey. Their expertise and support have helped me develop not only professional knowledge and practical skills, but also the confidence needed for clinical placement and future practice.

The School of Nursing provides us with a supportive environment, experienced teachers, and practical training opportunities for our learning and personal growth. Through this programme, I have grown more compassionate, mature, and prepared to contribute to society through nursing.

Leung Yung-pong

The School partners with hospitals and healthcare facilities at the local, national, and international levels to provide clinical placement opportunities and service-learning experiences.

I went on an exchange programme to Australia, where I attended lectures, sharing sessions, and simulation training with students from around the world. This experience has enhanced my understanding of different nursing practices and healthcare systems, enriched my thinking about the nursing profession, and widened my horizons. I developed friendships with peers from various countries, including the United Kingdom and Singapore.

For those seeking a nursing education that fosters leadership, innovation, and social responsibility, PolyU is the ideal choice.
