Student Message

My experience in the Applied Ageing Studies and Service Management programme has been incredibly enriching. The programme's interdisciplinary curriculum covers biological, psychological, social, and policy aspects, giving me a comprehensive understanding of ageing.

One of the programme's highlights has been the practical learning opportunities. Through the internship and services, I have been able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, gaining invaluable practical experience. These experiences have enhanced my professional skills and deepened my empathy and understanding of older adults.

Further, the programme's emphasis on service management has equipped me with the skills to design and implement effective services for the ageing population. I have learned a great deal about management and marketing strategies in human services. The programme has shown me how to attract a diverse range of individuals to utilise these services and manage them effectively.

Most importantly, this programme has taught me to view ageing holistically while providing numerous opportunities to develop my professional and interpersonal skills. Like seeds planted in fertile soil, the knowledge, experiences, and guidance I have received at PolyU have nurtured my growth and prepared me to thrive in the field of ageing services.

PAN Jianlong, Rex

I have gained a great deal during my two-year academic journey studying Applied Ageing Studies and Service Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The faculty and programmes have been excellent, providing students with abundant educational resources, providing a strong foundation for both personal and professional growth.

In terms of theoretical knowledge, the curriculum covers a wide range of topics, from the psychosocial aspects of older adults to how social policies and facility design can benefit the ageing population. These courses have allowed me to systematically acquire professional knowledge in this field.

PolyU has provided us with invaluable internship opportunities, allowing us to participate in actual work within community services and to understand the operational models of social enterprises. I have also gained deeper insights and preparation for my future career development through exchanges with the staff of the internship institutions.

LEUNG Tsz Ying, Ivy

Upon completing the Applied Ageing Studies and Service Management programme, my insight and ambition in social services were strengthened. This programme is a milestone in my life, equipping me with the requisite skills and knowledge to advance my career in social services.

This programme has emphasised both academic theory and practical field experience. The course structure and subjects from various departments enriched my study path at the university, and a variety of professional skills were learnt.

My internship with an organisation serving older adults with dementia allowed me to connect with diverse service users and to plan and execute dementia training activities. It was a most worthwhile experience that strengthened my willingness to work with older adults.

Currently, I am employed by a neighbourhood elderly centre as a programme worker. This position allows me to apply the strengths and abilities I gained from this programme. In my position, I discovered more opportunities for development and study.

The programme laid a strong foundation for my professional development and inspired me to continue growing through further studies and practical experience. It has helped me become a more knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated professional, ready to make a positive impact in human services.

TANG Cheuk Yin

As I approach graduation, I realise that what I have learned in the Applied Ageing Studies and Service Management programme has exceeded my expectations in just two years.

The programme focuses on ageing societies and the well-being of older adults, covering a wide range of subjects, including psychology, sociology, physical therapy, nursing, and management. Ageing is a major challenge facing society today, and it is an issue that cannot be avoided.

Beyond the enriching coursework, I am quite thankful for the exceptional opportunities the department provides. My internship in Canada was transformative, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, gain invaluable work experience, and broaden my global outlook. Subsequently, my exchange in Shanghai offered deep insights into contrasting elderly care systems between Hong Kong and mainland China. These experiences accelerated my growth immensely.

Preparing my capstone project further strengthened my passion for research. I am deeply fascinated by exploring the unknown and finding solutions to improve ageing societies, a path I am committed to pursuing.

To prospective students, my advice is simple: grasp every opportunity the programme offers. Each experience can become a powerful catalyst for learning, growth, and discovering your potential.
