Programme Aims

The programme is designed to equip students with knowledge of Chinese history and culture, as well as personal skills that they can apply in pursuing their career and in making contributions to the government, economy and society of Hong Kong, China and the rest of the world. The general aim of the programme is to educate and train students who are

1. strongly committed to self-cultivation and the welfare of the community;
2. culturally enriched and have effective communication skills;
3. respectful of the rule of law;
4. socially responsible; and
5. observant of business ethics and business common-sense.

Thus, graduates of the programme are empowered to become the following types of people.

1. Competent professionals: Graduates integrate and apply in-depth discipline-based knowledge and specialised skills that are fundamental to functioning effectively as an entry-level professional (i.e., exhibit professional competence); understand the global trends and opportunities related to their professions (i.e., exhibit a global outlook); and demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and skills in their work, including the discovery and use of opportunities, and experimentation with novel ideas (i.e., exhibit entrepreneurship).
2. Critical thinkers: Graduates are able to examine and critique the validity of information, arguments and different viewpoints, and reach a sound judgement on the basis of credible evidence and logical reasoning.
3. Effective communicators: Graduates are able to comprehend and communicate effectively in English and Chinese, orally and in writing, in professional and daily contexts.
4. Innovative problem solvers: Graduates are able to identify and define problems in professional and daily contexts, and produce creative and workable solutions to these problems.
5. Lifelong learners: Graduates recognise the need for continual learning and self-development, and are able to plan, manage and improve their own learning in pursuit of self-determined development goals.
6. Ethical leaders: Graduates have an understanding of leadership and are prepared to serve as leaders or team players (i.e., exhibit leadership and teamwork); demonstrate self-leadership and psychosocial competence in pursuing personal and professional development (i.e., exhibit intrapersonal competence); are capable of building and maintaining relationship and resolving conflicts in group work situations (i.e., exhibit interpersonal competence); and demonstrate ethical reasoning in professional and day-to-day contexts.
7. Socially responsible global citizens: Graduates understand different cultures and social development needs in local, national and global contexts (i.e., exhibit an interest in culture and social development); and accept their responsibilities as professionals and citizens in society, their own nation and the world (i.e., exhibit social, national and global responsibility)

These aims are fully compatible with the institutional learning aims of PolyU, which are to nurture graduates who are competent professionals, critical thinkers, effective communicators, innovative problem solvers, lifelong learners, ethical leaders, and socially responsible global citizens.
