About Programme
How to Apply
Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims
To equip students with advanced knowledge and professional skills in physiotherapy or a chosen area of clinical specialism within physiotherapy, to enable them to meet changing needs in physiotherapy practice and contribute to the development of specialised practices.

To equip students with the lifelong ability to critically analyse and evaluate ongoing practice to enhance the quality of physiotherapy practice.

To foster students' knowledge and skills in physiotherapy or areas of clinical specialism relevant to the discipline, and to improve professional competence in advanced physiotherapy practice.

Characteristics
Rehabilitation practice should be extended from hospitals and rehabilitation centres to clients’ homes and workplaces to support the integration of people with injuries, dysfunctions and disabilities into mainstream society. Our MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy (MScAdPT) provides physiotherapists with advanced knowledge and skills, and a strong theoretical and scientific foundation of evidence-based practice that is responsive to both personal and environmental factors encompassing primary to tertiary healthcare.

Besides the Generic advanced physiotherapy stream, the programme offers a unique range of clinical specialisations in the practice of Neurology, Musculoskeletal and Sports, and Manual and Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy. The specialism in Neurology Physiotherapy focuses on critically reviewing and integrating evidence-based practice to enhance clinical outcomes and practice, whilst specialisms in Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy, and Manual and Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy focus on the integration of advanced professional knowledge and practice through clinical reasoning and practice.

Please note that this programme does not confer eligibility for registration with the Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.

Recognition & Prospects

MScAdPT (Specialism in Neurology Physiotherapy)

MScAdPT (Specialism in Neurology Physiotherapy) equips graduates with extensive knowledge and practical skills in managing patients with all major adult neurological disorders. The increasing prevalence of both acquired and age-related neurological conditions ensures a steady demand for physiotherapists specialising in neurological rehabilitation. Our graduates can work in hospitals (in-patient and out-patient units), rehabilitation centres, clinics, and research institutions. This course provides a strong foundation for an impactful career in neurological physiotherapy.

MScAdPT (Specialism in Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy)

MScAdPT (Specialism in Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy) is designed to develop sports physiotherapists to international competency standards. The programme is recognised as an accredited qualification under the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association (HKPA) Title Programme1. Graduates holding a Hong Kong physiotherapy registration may apply for full membership in the HKPA Sports and Exercise Specialty Group and the HKPA Titled Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist designation. Membership and titling are subject to additional requirements beyond degree completion. Graduates have pursued advanced careers in private sports physiotherapy clinics, elite sports institutes, and professional sports teams.

MScAdPT (Specialism in Manual and Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy)

MScAdPT (Specialism in Manual and Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy), formerly known as the MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy, fulfils all of the requirements of international monitoring (educational programme review process) set by the International Federation of Manual and Musculoskeletal Physical Therapists Incorporated (IFOMPT). For details on educational standards and global recognition, please visit the IFOMPT website.

Students who complete this programme with a specialism award may be eligible to apply for full membership of the Manipulative Therapy Specialty Group of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, which is a member organisation of the IFOMPT. Mr Alex NG (Senior Sports Physiotherapist, Hong Kong Sports Institute)

Spending two years on the Sports Physiotherapy programme with PolyU has been a transformative experience that solidified my decision to specialise in this field. The programme provided extensive on-field exposure across various sports, including volleyball and handball, with the university team, which enriched my practical knowledge. A key highlight was my placement at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, where I gained invaluable hands-on experience and confirmed my aspiration to work in such an environment. The curriculum was comprehensive, covering essential aspects of sports physiotherapy, while also introducing me to the multidisciplinary nature of the field. I particularly valued the opportunity to learn from guest speakers, who ranged from strength and conditioning experts to psychologists and dietitians, offering diverse perspectives and insights into the collaborative approach required in sports.

Ms LAU Cheuk Chi (Senior Sports Physiotherapist, Hong Kong Sports Institute)

The MSc in Sports Physiotherapy programme incorporates knowledge and skills in sports injury prevention, pitch-side care, sports-specific rehabilitation and performance enhancement. I have had the chance to work with coaches and sports medical professionals, and I have come to understand the concept of high-performance training. Moreover, my clinical placement experience enhanced my reasoning and decision-making skills. I am grateful for the career opportunities that this graduate degree has opened up for me, including the chance to work with athletes from amateur to elite levels.

Miss Cherry CHAN Lok Yi (Physiotherapist I, University Rehabilitation Clinic, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 2023 Graduate of MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy)

The Master of Science in Manipulative Physiotherapy is a globally recognised and well-structured programme. It not only focuses on mastering manual techniques but also emphasises the development of critical and evidence-based clinical reasoning skills. The programme includes clinical placements led by experienced clinical educators who inspire us to analyse and address neuromusculoskeletal conditions through various reasoning approaches.

Students enrolled in this programme are physiotherapists who are passionate about the musculoskeletal specialty. The programme serves as an excellent platform for exchanging experiences, knowledge, and ideas, fostering mutual growth throughout the course. This two-year master's programme has been incredibly rewarding and inspiring. I have gained valuable insights from the faculty's shared experiences and engaging discussions with classmates.

I highly recommend this programme to physiotherapists seeking to enhance their professional knowledge and expertise in manual and neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Mr Geoffrey YU Cho Wai (2023 Graduate of MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy)

In the hustle for improvement in clinical practice, the Master of Science in Manipulative Physiotherapy programme enabled me to become a better physiotherapist with greater precision in clinical judgement and a stronger commitment for patient care. The programme features exposure to both contemporary and classical schools of thought for the arts of manual therapy. It encourages students to critically synthesise the strengths and pitfalls of different theories related to manual therapy, make specific physical diagnoses, and apply the best treatment options with reason and accuracy against various neuromusculoskeletal diseases and pain conditions. Learning by examples from our mentors and teachers during the year-long clinical placement, we have improved ourselves to listen to our patients not only by using our ears but through our hands, seeing patients’ concerns with more understanding, and empowering them to recover from their conditions through specific exercise and self-management in addition to our effective manual therapy. The research experience with expert guidance in conducting an experimental project study inspired me to dedicate myself to clinical research to discover new knowledge that can be translated to clinical practice. I am very grateful to be a graduate of this rewarding programme.
