Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The Master of Science Scheme in Artificial Intelligence for the Professions (MAI-Pro) integrates core AI expertise with discipline-specific knowledge through an interdisciplinary curriculum, demonstrating how AI can be applied across diverse fields. Designed for individuals from varied academic and industry backgrounds, the Scheme develops their AI competencies and professional capabilities to apply AI effectively in their respective fields.

The programme objectives are:

  • Develop students’ advanced AI knowledge and technical competence for application across diverse professional, disciplinary, and industrial contexts.

  • Equip students to analyse complex professional problems and design innovative, responsible, and domain-relevant AI-enabled solutions.

  • Prepare students to adapt to emerging AI developments, evolving professional needs, and lifelong professional growth.

Programme Characteristics

Through an interdisciplinary, application-oriented curriculum, MAI-Pro integrates AI theories, methodologies, tools, and technologies with domain-specific contexts, enabling students to develop a strong understanding of AI and its applications in their respective fields.  Alongside technical acumen, the Scheme fosters critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and adaptability. By combining advanced AI knowledge with professional relevance, MAI-Pro equips graduates to navigate and shape the future landscape of their industries with confidence and innovation. Hosted by the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS), the Scheme is the University’s first and only programme of its kind, bringing together expertise from various Faculties and one School to provide a uniquely interdisciplinary learning experience.

The participating Faculties and School are:

  • Faculty of Business (FB)

  • Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE)

  • Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) – the host

  • Faculty of Engineering (FENG)

  • Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS)
