The School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT) is dedicated to advancing knowledge in fashion, textiles, materials, and design innovation. Our work spans a wide range of areas, including smart textiles, functional materials, sustainability, digital fashion, and technology-enabled design and manufacturing. We strive to combine scientific inquiry with creative practice, fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research that addresses industrial, social, and environmental challenges. Our centrally managed laboratories and workshops are equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment, enabling research staff and students to pursue excellence in a dynamic and challenging research landscape.

Most of our centrally managed research equipment is managed by the University Research Facility Management System (URFMS). Please refer to our Guide for SFT Users for detailed instructions on equipment booking via URFMS.

3D Body Scanning Laboratory

Body scanning laboratory is equipped with the state-of-the-art 3D body scanning system Vitus Smart XXL from Human Solutions. The laboratory is extensively used to support many research activities, such as 3D pattern design, studies on intimate apparel, sizing China anthropometrics, etc.

Computer laboratory is designed for teaching function for subjects relating to the use of computers. This laboratory is equipped with 60 sets of advanced computing systems with the most up-to-date professional software such as Adobe CC, CLO, Browzwear. These advanced infrastructures facilitate various disciplines in SFT to enhance diverse innovative research and experiments in fashion and textile design. Apart from teaching, this is also the venue for the casual use of personal computers, where the most common types of application software are made available. This laboratory is a popular place for students to access the internet and prepare for their courses.

Visual fashion retailing theatre is equipped with panoramic screen, sophisticated motion-picture projection system, digital surround-sound effects and multisensory simulation technology. These cutting-edge technologies immerse viewers in larger-than-life 2-D and 3-D images and ultra-realistic digital sound. It also enables students to create simulated virtual environment which opens up unlimited explorations in fashion business.

The Fashion Design Studio is designed to provide an interactive, stimulating, and creative learning and teaching environment that supports design development and innovation. To further enhance design education, SFT has redesigned and reconstructed the entire QT Wing on the 6th floor into a new integrated Fashion Design Studio. Occupying a total area of approximately 650 square metres, the Studio brings together a range of dedicated facilities under one roof, including two pattern construction laboratories, one project laboratory, 85 design cubicles, one research office, and four staff offices. The laboratories are equipped with audio systems and wireless microphones to support effective teaching and demonstrations. The Studio is also fitted with advanced visual equipment to facilitate presentations, critiques, design reviews, and collaborative learning.

Serving undergraduate, master’s, and research students of SFT, the Fashion Design Studio provides a dynamic space for creative exploration, innovative design practice, research activities, and cross-level interaction within the school.

Garment Workshop supports core learning and teaching activities, research initiatives, and school events, focusing on essential garment manufacturing processes, with a particular emphasis on sewing and finishing. The workshop is equipped with a comprehensive range of machinery, spanning standard lockstitch and overedge machines to specialized machines for zigzag, cover stitch, buttonholing, and bar-tack operations—tailored to different skill levels and course requirements. Beyond traditional sewing, the workshop accommodates advanced, threadless seaming technologies such as ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding. Two digital embroidery machines for custom design development are located in the adjacent project room, while a pressing room with professional pressing and fusing equipment is available for final finishing.

The Contour Fashion and Activewear Studio offers a vibrant and interactive environment to support teaching and learning in apparel design and development. Spanning 106 square metres, the studio is equipped with a wide range of resources, including intimate apparel garments, fabrics, accessories, multimedia teaching tools, and learning aids.

The studio regularly hosts programme-specific compulsory subjects, ensuring students have access to up-to-date materials and resources made possible through strong industry engagement. This immersive space is designed to inspire innovative thinking and practical problem-solving, effectively supporting student learning and creativity in the field of fashion and textiles.

The V13 Fashion Design Studio

Situated on the top floor of the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, the V13 Fashion Design Studio provides a 215-square-meter working environment for final-year BA students. The facility includes 60 specialized workstations, a project room, a multi-purpose event space, and an outdoor terrace garden. Each workstation is designed for efficiency and collaboration, featuring a concealed magnetic mini-board, a mobile device holder with a charging slot, integrated storage, and an engraved pattern-making ruler. The studio is equipped with professional sewing and overlocking machinery for technical production. For public presentation and academic exchange, the multi-purpose event space accommodates exhibitions, seminars, fashion shows, and photo shoots, while the terrace garden—marked by a steel SFT logo—offers an outdoor space for inspiration and relaxation.

The Advanced Textile Processing Laboratory takes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from physics, chemistry, polymer science, biology, and various engineering disciplines to develop functional treatment methods for textile materials. Central to its advanced fabrication capabilities is the electrospinning machine, which enables precise synthesis of functional nanofibers and advanced membrane coatings. By combining surface modification, smart polymer integration, and nanofiber technology, the laboratory creates innovative textiles with enhanced performance.

Apparel finishing laboratory are equipped with high speed digital printer for transfer printing, manual and programmable machines for embroidery and rhinestone motif design, high technology laser machine for engraving, and also spraying machine for pattern painting. This laboratory provides a specific working environment with high technological equipment in apparel finishing process to foster the creativity of student mind. The goal of the apparel finishing laboratory is to stimulate the creative mind in students by integrate the application of apparel finishing approaches.

Dyeing and finishing workshop houses a variety of dyeing machines from batchwise to continuous processing. Textiles materials in fibre, yarn, fabric and garment forms can be processed in this workshop. The capacity of the machines is suitable for pilot trials. This workshop has a dark-room for printing screen preparation. The printed fibre can be fixed with various steamers available.

Human Performance Apparel Research Laboratory

The Performance Apparel Research Lab is equipped with two advanced atmospheric chambers, capable of replicating a wide array of weather conditions to test the limits of performance apparel under various environmental stresses.

Wind Tunnel Atmospheric Chamber: This chamber can replicate temperatures from 0°C to 50°C, humidity from 20% to 95%, and wind speeds up to 8 m/s, offering a robust platform precise testing of sportswear resilience and performance.

Human Performance Atmospheric Chamber: Focusing on athletes' comfort and performance, this chamber controls temperatures from 0°C to 30°C, humidity from 20% to 95%, and features a multi-camera motion capture system with O2 and CO2 level monitoring, perfect for evaluating sportswear during training of various intensities.

Our advanced facilities provide year-round, consistent conditions for researchers and designers to innovate and enhance sportswear for any environment.

Human Performance Laboratory

The Human Performance Lab provides advanced facilities to support research and innovation in human movement analysis and the development of sportswear and medical garments. The lab is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, such as a multi-camera motion tracking system and wearable IMUs for kinematic analysis, enabling gait, balance, and performance evaluations.

Other advanced research equipment includes a portable spiroergometer system for cardiopulmonary exercise testing, infrared thermal cameras for garment heat dissipation studies and thermal comfort evaluation, and a handheld 3D scanner with 3D modelling software for surface geometry evaluation. Additionally, flexible pressure sensors of various sizes are available to evaluate garment-body pressures for tight-fit and compression garments.

The lab serves as a collaborative space for researchers pursuing functional garment development and innovation to optimize human performance.

Knitting Workshop

Knitting workshop provides a comprehensive range of equipments for learning the knitting technology being used in the apparel industry. A quarter of the workshop is dedicated to basic training in weft knitting, where over 20 units of manual knitting machine, are in place. That is also a studio for knit designs, where sample swatches are knitted and displayed. Powered machines include warp knitting machines, flat knitting machines and circular knitting machines. The group of warp knitting machines includes a Rashcel machine, a Tricot machine and a scarf machine. The 3 units of power flat knitting machines are nearly all capable computer-controlled automatic machines. The range of circular machines includes a small diameter teaching machine, a rib machine, an interlock machine, a single jersey machine and a large diameter jacquard machine with a selection of electronic needles. Other specialised machines include a sock machine, a glove machine and a state-of-the-art, seamless garment machine.

Laser engraving laboratory is equipped with a Spaish Laser GFK Flexi-150. The laser source is excited by CO2 in the form of infrared with wavelength 10.6um, and can provide a maximum power at 150W to engrave and even cutting on a wide range of textile materials. As the same supplier of the "Robotex" in MN015, this system also consists of a mannequin system which 2 sizable dummies can be "flip-flop" to the laser head and process under laser, this system enhances the production rate and repeatability of fabric since the laser engraving area are the same in every treatment. It is also an environmental friendly post-treatment process, since only evaporated dye and few carbon particles will be produced during production, traditional washing and bleaching processes can be eliminated thus no contaminated water will be discharged, and less energy will be used.

Plasma treatment laboratory is equipped with two units of plasma instruments. One unit is operating under vacuum while the other is operating in atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric plasma system "Atomflo(TM)-400"+B27 is manufactured by Surfx, an American company. The plasma applicator can be fixed on the programmable X-Y-Z robotic system that the plasma treatment can be done automatically. Plasma treatment is applied to fabric surface to alter the physical properties, for example, the surface roughness and surface energy, which is related to the water permeability of fabrics. The plasma treatment is a completely dry process which can be used for treating and modifying material surface without altering much the bulk properties of the materials.

Weaving workshop is designed for practical classes and applied research work. It is equipped with a wide range of machinery for the production of broad and narrow fabrics, needle punched non-wovens and hand-tufted carpets. It also has its own CAD room installed with various CAD systems for design dobby and jacquard.

Testing Laboratories

Control laboratory maintains a standard atmosphere twenty-four a day for testing; i.e., the temperature is set 20 ± 2°C and the relative humidity at 65 ± 2%. The laboratory is equipped with a Spinlab 900 System to test cotton fibres, an Uster Tensorapid 3 to test the strength of single yarns, an Uster Tester 3 to check for evenness and imperfections in yarn, and Instron testers for tensile and compressive testing. Tests for water vapour transmission and cotton bundle strength are also provided. Both teaching and research work are carried out in the laboratory.

Fabric Objective Measurement Laboratory maintains a standard atmosphere (i.e., the temperature is set 20 ± 2°C and the relative humidity at 65 ± 2%) 24 hours and offers the following testing facilities: Kawabata Evaluation System of fabric (KES-F). KES-F tests the low stress mechanical properties of fabrics, including compression, surface friction and roughness, bending, shear and extension. KES ThermoLabo II Tester for evaluating thermal comfort properties such as the warm/cool feeling, thermal conductivity and the warmth retention of fabrics. KES Air-permeability Tester is used for testing the resistance of fabric to the passage of air.

Physical testing laboratory consists of assorted equipment for testing the physical properties of textile materials. For fibres, the tests include those for wool and cotton fibre fineness, cotton maturity, cotton fibre bundle strength, the regaining of moisture and the identification of fibres by microscopes. For yarn, tests are provided on yarn linear density, lea strength, yarn twist, yarn friction, yarn abrasion resistance, and the crimp rigidity of synthetic yarns. Fabrics can be tested for abrasion resistance, air permeability, bursting strength, dimensional stability, pilling, snagging, tearing strength, water repellency, water resistance. The laboratory is mainly for teaching and also supports research.

The Analytical Laboratory is equipped with sophisticated, computerized instruments designed for advanced material characterization, evaluation, and analysis. The facility features the weathering instrument, an industry-standard system for precise textile lightfastness and weathering testing under simulated environmental conditions. Additionally, the laboratory houses high-temperature thermal equipment, including the chamber and tube furnace.

The Chemical Laboratory provides a safe and functional environment designed for chemical synthesis, sample preparation, and wet chemistry operations. The laboratory is equipped with benches for routine experiments, apparatus assembly, and sample handling. To ensure user protection, the lab features modern chemical fume hoods that continuously exhaust hazardous vapors, volatile organic compounds, and toxic fumes. With integrated utility connections, dedicated chemical storage, and spacious workstations, this laboratory offers an essential foundation for daily research, quality control, and safe experimental workflows.

The Colour Evaluation Laboratory houses the equipment mainly for colour characterisation of textile and non-textile samples. The instruments used such as the DataColor spectrophotometers are the norm in the industry. The layout and the wall colour of the laboratory are specially designed for colour evaluation. The laboratory also has several standard viewing boxes for colour assessments according to international standards.

The Colouration Laboratory is equipped with advanced dyeing machinery for precise lab-dip preparation, including high-temperature dyeing above 100℃ for polyester substrates. Featuring the Datacolor lab dyeing machine, the facility ensures exceptional shade levelness and repeatability. To evaluate fabric performance, the lab utilizes comprehensive fastness testing equipment, such as the Launder-Ometer, crockmeter, perspiration tester, which comply with major European and American standards. Additionally, the lab houses specialized equipment, including the flammability tester, delivering reliable performance characterization for textile materials.

The Instrumentation Laboratory consists of assorted equipment for testing the physical properties of textile materials. Key research and testing capabilities include objective fabric handle characterization (Fabric Assurance by Simple Testing (FAST), precise textile UPF analysis (Labsphere UV-2000F UV Transmittance Analyzer), and human-centric fabric sensory perception evaluations (PhabrOmeter® Model 3 Fabric Quality Evaluation System). The laboratory supports high-performance fabric innovation, quality assurance, and comfort optimization.

The Material Processing and Synthesis Laboratory is equipped with diversified laboratory instruments for material synthesis and characterization. The major instruments include a Differential Scanning Calorimeter, a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer, a Differential Scanning Calorimeter, a Thermogravimetric Analyser, two UV/Visible Spectrometers and a Contact Angle Goniometer.
