Summary

This talk examines the reason why environmental design research information has had greater penetration into design decision-making only in the past 25–30 years. While a substantial body of exemplary knowledge has been produced in academia since the 1960s, it may not be entirely erroneous to argue that the penetration of evidence-based (EB) knowledge in design decision-making has not been as optimal as originally envisaged. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, however, an unprecedented level of environmental design research penetration has been witnessed in the healthcare design sector. What could be the reason? How could this be possibly expanded to the broader context of design practice? What could we learn from the past, and how could we possibly strategise the future? The speaker will draw from his personal experiences in corporate and academic research, as well as in design practice, over 35 years in three countries, to posit his views on these questions.
