Summary

Tran$form - New Value. Shredded Money is a material exploration led by students in the SD4463 Sustainable Product Design, with support from the Material Resource Centre (MRC). The project explores how waste materials can be reused.

Working with Hong Kong Note Printing Limited, seven student groups explored waste from banknote printing. This fibre-rich material is usually destroyed. Students shredded, pulped, pressed, wove, and reformulated it to create new products and material samples. Their work gives paper fibres a longer life and challenges what we think of as waste. The results include tactile surfaces, useful objects, and ideas for new material systems. They show how industrial waste can become valuable design material.

Visit the Material Corner on the 5th floor of MRC to see the students’ work and the collaboration between manufacturing and sustainable design education. Discover how discarded currency can be transformed into new materials.
