Building the future: PolyU and CSHK join forces to drive innovation and develop engineering talent
PolyU has joined hands with China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited (CSHK) through a newly signed agreement, cementing a strategic partnership focused on advancing research innovation and cultivating future talent.
Under this collaboration, the two institutions will establish the PolyU–CSHK Joint Laboratory and launch the "China State Construction" – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Engineering Scholarship. The joint initiative is designed to drive breakthroughs in smart and low-carbon buildings, modular integrated construction (MiC), drones, construction robotics, and digital management, while seamlessly integrating education, technology, and talent development to nurture the next-generation of engineering and I&T professionals.
Pioneering research for industry transformation
Building on previous successful projects in healthcare architecture and 3D scene reconstruction, the PolyU–CSHK Joint Laboratory will leverage real-world engineering scenarios across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area to address key construction challenges and accelerate the development and deployment of innovative solutions for the built environment. By bringing together research capabilities from PolyU's Faculty of Construction and Environment, Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, and Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Laboratory will accelerate the translation and application of cutting-edge technology. Meanwhile, CSHK will provide real-world testing and implementation opportunities, helping bridge research and industry practice while fostering closer collaboration between academia and the construction sector.
Empowering future leaders and shaping opportunities
To support Hong Kong's ambition to become an international hub for high-calibre talent and reinforce the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, CSHK will offer dedicated scholarships and internship opportunities for undergraduates from PolyU's Faculty of Construction and Environment. This hands-on experience will enable students to build real-world expertise and expand their professional networks.
PolyU President Professor Jin-Guang Teng highlighted that innovative technologies are reshaping the construction supply chain towards higher efficiency, quality, and sustainability. He expressed strong confidence that combining CSHK’s industry leadership with PolyU's strengths in research and talent cultivation will yield fruitful outcomes for the sustainable development of the sector.
Echoing this vision, Mr Zhang Haipeng, Director and General Manager of China Overseas Holdings Limited, the parent company of CSHK, emphasised that this synergy between industry and academia will empower young minds and support Hong Kong's development as an international innovation and technology hub, as well as the Northern Metropolis.
