PolyU is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Vice President (Academic Development), Professor Muhteşem Süleyman Demokan, who passed away last month. Professor Demokan’s exemplary leadership and enduring commitment to academic excellence have left a remarkable imprint on PolyU, shaping the University’s growth and inspiring all who had the privilege to work with him. PolyU extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
Professor Demokan served as PolyU Vice President (Academic Development) from 2005 to 2010, during which he played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation for PolyU to become an innovative world-class university. His efforts greatly advanced academic and research excellence in Hong Kong and beyond. Since joining the institution in 1988, Professor Demokan’s longstanding dedication also contributed to PolyU’s transition from a polytechnic to full university status in 1994.
As the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1988 to 1995, and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2005, Professor Demokan demonstrated outstanding leadership, expertise, and significant influence in both engineering and education. PolyU President Professor Jin-Guang Teng, who had the opportunity to work with Professor Demokan, expressed profound sadness at his passing, stating, “Professor Demokan was not only a distinguished leader at PolyU, who devoted more than two decades of service to the University, but also a mentor and colleague whom I greatly admired. During his time as Vice President (Academic Development), I had the privilege of working under his leadership and witnessing first-hand his unwavering dedication, wisdom, and generosity. His visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to academic excellence have left an indelible mark on PolyU, shaping the University’s growth and inspiring all who had the fortune to work with him.”
Furthermore, Professor Demokan made a notable contribution to sports development and student-athlete support at PolyU. As Honorary Manager of the Tennis Team from 2005 until his retirement, he promoted sportsmanship and championed scholarships to attract talented athletes. He emphasised the importance of balancing sports and academics, encouraging student-athletes to excel in both by making necessary sacrifices. Proud of their achievements, especially at the 2009 East Asian Games, he celebrated their success and advocated for opportunities in higher education. His leadership and encouragement have left a lasting impact, inspiring PolyU athletes to pursue excellence in both sports and studies.
Professor Demokan’s lifelong commitment to education and his remarkable legacy at PolyU will be fondly remembered and continue to inspire future generations of scholars and educators.
