The UK-based Royal Academy of Engineering, which brings together some of the world’s leading engineers to promote excellence in the field, recently welcomed 74 new Fellows, including 60 Fellows, nine International Fellows and five Honorary Fellows. Among the International Fellows is Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President and Chair Professor of Structural Engineering of PolyU.

Professor Teng has built an illustrious career marked by innovation and global impact in structural engineering. In the early stages of his career, he focused on research into thin metal shell structures. Starting around the mid-1990s, he gradually shifted his research focus to the structural application of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil engineering.

To date, he has been engaged in research in this field for about three decades. He initially researched the design theory for the strengthening of concrete structures and later began to also work on the use of FRP in new construction. Many of his research findings have been adopted into relevant design standards or guidelines in China, the US, Europe, the UK, and Australia––thereby helping engineers around the world produce safe and cost-effective structural designs.

A well-accomplished and distinguished scholar, he has authored one book and over 230 SCI journal papers. In the "World's Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists List" based on career-long citation impact released by Stanford University, Professor Teng has consistently ranked 7th or 8th globally in the field of civil engineering from 2019 to 2025, and 1st or 2nd among Chinese scholars. Professor Teng is also a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an International Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering, and a Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, reflecting his outstanding academic career.

Under Professor Teng’s leadership, PolyU has made significant progress in various fields and is ranked 54th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings. PolyU will continue advancing its teaching and research endeavours to contribute to the development of Hong Kong into an international innovation & technology centre and an international hub for postsecondary education, as well as to the great cause of national rejuvenation.

Congratulations to Professor Teng on his well-deserved recognition!
