The PolyU-Zhongshan Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute), the latest addition to PolyU’s Mainland Translational Research Institutes, is dedicated to advancing research in biomedicine. This partnership between PolyU and the Zhongshan Municipal People’s Government (Zhongshan Government) marks a significant milestone in collaboration in biomedicine between the two cities, further strengthening PolyU’s presence in the Mainland.

The Institute will focus on four major areas in the biomedicine and healthcare industries:

  • Innovative diagnostic drugs and medical devices
Including cancer diagnostics, nucleic acid targeting technologies and anti-infective drugs

  • New biomedicine materials
Emphasising AI-assisted imaging diagnostics and drug delivery systems for cancer treatment

  • Spinal health biomedical engineering
Covering smart wearable devices, new materials for functional apparel, AI-assisted neuro-engineering and rehabilitation robotics

  • Animal influenza vaccine development
Building on PolyU’s leading research in zoonotic diseases

The inauguration ceremony of the Institute was held in Zhongshan, attended by PolyU representatives including Professor Wing-tak Wong, PolyU Deputy President and Provost; Professor Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation); Associate Vice Presidents; and Professor Gary Wong Ka-leung, Chair Professor of Chemistry, who has been appointed the Director of the Institute.

Professor Wing-tak Wong said, “I believe the Institute will leverage the research strengths of the University and the solid industrial foundation of Zhongshan, making this partnership a key achievement for the Greater Bay Area (GBA) community and driving high-quality development in the region.”

Representatives from the Zhongshan Government included Mr Ye Hongguang, Member of the Leading Party Group of the Zhongshan People’s Government and Vice Mayor of Zhongshan City; Mr Ouyang Jinquan, Vice Mayor of Zhongshan City; and other Government officials.

Mr Ouyang Jinquan stated that the Institute integrates the needs of the Nation, the vision of the GBA, the capabilities of Zhongshan and the strengths of PolyU. He added, “We envisage that the Institute will also serve as a super-connector, attracting more innovation resources to Zhongshan from around the world and providing a new model for collaborative innovation within the GBA.”

On the same occasion, the Institute signed agreements with several leading research institutions and domestic enterprises in Zhongshan to foster industry-academia-research collaboration.
