Redefining Neurotechnology: Prof. John A. Rogers of Northwestern University on Soft Bioelectronics

Soft bioelectronics advances took centre stage at the second Cambridge NeuroWorks and PolyU PAIR Joint Seminar on 21 July 2026, featuring renowned bioelectronics pioneer Prof. John A. ROGERS of Northwestern University.  Co-hosted by Prof. George MALLIARAS, Cambridge NeuroWorks Scientific Lead and Prince Philip Professor of Technology at the University of Cambridge, and Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PAIR and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science at PolyU, the online seminar, titled “Bioelectronic Systems as Neural Interfaces”, drew over a total of 14,600 Zoom participants and live steam audience worldwide, bringing together researchers, industry experts and members of the public from 20 countries and regions. Opening the event, Prof. Sir John ASTON, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research of the University of Cambridge, emphasised that the seminar is about “sharing ideas and creating long-term partnerships and friendships across the world – about creating a global community determined to improve the lives of billions of people.”  Echoing this sentiment, Prof. ZHENG Zijian, Vice President (Knowledge Transfer) at PolyU, noted that the series aims to “build a community of researchers who share a common goal: improving lives through science, technology and innovation.”  Both highlighted the critical role of international and multidisciplinary collaboration in advancing neurotechnology into affordable, scalable clinical solutions. In his keynote address, Prof. Rogers explored the transformative field of bioelectronic neural interfaces, which is reshaping neuroscience and opening up new avenues for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.  He also discussed how advanced electronic and optoelectronic technologies can be seamlessly integrated with soft biological tissues, enabling the precise monitoring and modulation of neural circuits across one-, two- and three-dimensional architectures. The seminar continued with a pitching session showcasing translational neurotechnology research from both institutions: Mr Sam KAMALI, CEO of Myonerv and Former Fellow of Cambridge NeuroWorks, introduced a closed-loop neurostimulator designed to remotely monitor and treat stroke-induced paralysis; Ms Allie WILLIAMS, Research Assistant at Plasticity Lab, University of Cambridge and Fellow of Cambridge NeuroWorks, presented “Ms Smarty Pants”, a novel device that helps maintain pelvic and musculoskeletal health; Prof. LIANG Haulou, Interim Head of Division of Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities, Associate Director of University Research Facility in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience, and Chair Professor of Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence, PolyU, highlighted the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in predicting dementia from speech; and Prof. Vivian HUI, Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, PolyU, demonstrated how LLMs can bridge the gap between clinical education, surgical care and patient narratives. The seminar concluded with an engaging panel discussion moderated by Prof. George Malliaras and Prof. ZHANG Weixiong, Associate Director of PAIR, PolyU.  The panellists explored critical themes, including the clinical translation of neurotechnologies into human applications, real-world success stories of neural interfaces, and pathways to patient impact.  They emphasised that translating research into meaningful clinical outcomes requires close collaboration among patients, clinicians, researchers and industry partners.  This collaborative approach lies at the heart of the shared vision of Cambridge NeuroWorks and PolyU PAIR, which they continue to advance through innovation and partnership. 从生物力学看癌症转移:清华学者冯西桥教授分享细胞动力学前沿研究

2026年7月20日,中国科学院院士、清华大学工程力学系生物力学与医学工程研究所讲席教授冯西桥教授,于校园主讲理大高等研究院杰出学人讲座,题为「细胞动力学的多尺度理论与数值方法」。是次讲座吸引逾70名现场观众参与,并于多个社交媒体平台录得近16,200人次在线观看。 讲座中,冯教授介绍了生物力学领域的最新进展,重点阐述用于理解细胞动态行为的多尺度理论与数值方法。他指出,生物组织中的生理与病理过程,往往涉及生物、化学、力学及物理等多重因素的协同作用。由于细胞的结构、物理特性及生物功能极为复杂,如何建立准确的模型以解析这些过程,至今仍是科学界面临的重要挑战。他亦指出,材料特性、不稳定性、演化、多尺度行为、多场耦合及形态力学等,均为生物力学领域的重要研究方向。 讲座其中一个重点主题,是细胞与组织中的动态不稳定性。冯教授探讨了力学与化学反馈如何塑造细胞的动态行为,并引发分岔、振荡与图案形成等现象,包括霍普夫分岔(Hopf bifurcation)、叉式分岔、类图灵图案(Turing-like patterns)。他亦以果蝇羊膜浆膜细胞的自发振荡为例,说明集体细胞振荡在胚胎发育过程中的重要作用。 随后,讲座焦点由单个细胞的动态行为转至集体细胞动力学,介绍相关的实验与理论研究方法。冯教授阐述研究人员如何透过分析大型细胞群体的几何形态、运动速度、迁移轨迹、拓扑结构及界面演化等特征,揭示其集体行为的内在规律,并运用统计力学与熵基理论(Entropy-based theories),包括察利斯统计(Tsallis statistics),以深入解析集体细胞的主动迁移行为。这些行为对理解癌细胞扩散与转移机制具有重要意义。 冯教授亦探讨了多尺度建模的最新发展,以及人工智能在生物力学研究中日益重要的角色。他指出,虽然AlphaFold3等人工智能工具已在蛋白质结构预测方面取得重大突破,但现有模型在预测生物功能,以及描述横跨多重空间与时间尺度的动态过程方面仍然存在局限。因此,未来有必要建立涵盖生物、化学及力学等多学科数据的综合数据库,并结合人工智能技术,推动虚拟细胞与类器官平台的发展。 讲座亦探讨了生物力学在疾病研究中的重要应用,尤其是癌症转移及免疫系统生物力学。冯教授展示了癌细胞如何透过力学、化学与生物讯号之间的耦合机制,在狭窄空间中迁移,并透过调整自身形态以适应不同的力学环境。他亦介绍了免疫系统中的生物力学机制,包括淋巴结在炎症、免疫反应、免疫记忆形成及疾病演化过程中的重要功能。 讲座最后设有互动问答环节,由香港理工大学生物医学工程学系课程主任谭又华教授主持。 按此重温

World-renowned bioelectronics pioneer Prof. John Rogers to present second PAIR—Cambridge NeuroWorks online neuroscience seminar

The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has partnered with Cambridge NeuroWorks, UK—an alliance of nine partners including the University of Cambridge—to launch an online seminar series in neuroscience.  The inaugural seminar was a remarkable success, attracting 14,000 viewers worldwide from academia, industry, and the public. Building on this strong momentum, the second seminar “Bioelectronic Systems as Neural Interfaces”, will be delivered by Prof. John A. ROGERS of Northwestern University on 21 July 2026.  The seminar will offer insights into cutting-edge bioelectronic technologies that are transforming the way researchers study and interact with the nervous system.  Prof. Rogers will present pioneering approaches that integrate advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices with neural tissues, enabling unprecedented capabilities for monitoring and modulating neural circuits.  Drawing on examples from brain research and organoid-based studies, the seminar will highlight how these innovations are opening new frontiers in neuroscience, regenerative medicine and the treatment of neurological disorders. 理大与地政总署深化合作 推动地理空间社会创新 促进智慧及共融城市发展

香港理工大学(理大)土地及空间研究院、香港特别行政区政府地政总署测绘处,以及理大赛马会社会创新设计院正式成立「地理空间社会创新研究小组」,标志着各方在推动地理空间技术与社会创新融合应用,以及促进公共及社区福祉方面展开更紧密协作。 研究小组的成立进一步落实理大与地政总署于 2025 年 9 月签订的合作备忘录。该备忘录旨在推动符合官方标准的智慧测绘、地图制作及地理空间服务发展,并通过前沿研究、技术提升及专业培训,加快香港数码城市建设。在这合作框架下,理大学术及研究单位与地政总署测绘处紧密合作,于科研、教育及知识转移等范畴深化跨学科交流与发展,涵盖土地测量、地理信息系统、遥感技术、智慧城市、人工智能及位置为本技术等领域。 作为合作框架下首个重要项目,研究小组汇聚理大土地及空间研究院、地政总署测绘处及理大赛马会社会创新设计院三方力量。其中,理大赛马会社会创新设计院作为新加入的协作机构,将发挥其在社会创新、跨界协作及社区为本设计方面的专业优势,协助团队拓展合作机遇,并推动相关创新项目的策划与落实。 研究小组召集人包括理大土地及空间研究院院长丁晓利教授、地政总署测绘处总土地测量师(土地信息中心)蔡伟文先生及总测量经理(特别职务)苏文昌先生,以及理大赛马会社会创新设计院暂任总监林美华女士。作为跨界协作平台,研究小组将促进学界、政府及社会创新实践者协同合作,善用空间数据及地理空间技术,共同探索应对城市与社区发展挑战的创新方案。小组将通过研究交流、能力建设、试点项目及专业活动,推动空间数据及地理空间技术在社区发展、社会共融、易行度研究及智慧城市建设等范畴的应用,并促进相关创新方案转化落地,提升社会整体福祉。 研究小组于 2026 年 7 月 9 日在理大举行首次会议。会上,成员围绕未来合作重点及发展方向展开深入讨论,并探讨如何运用空间数据及地理空间技术应对社会需要,为社区及城市发展带来更广泛的正面影响。其中一项重点议题为于 2026 年 7 月 15 日推出的「步行香港 Walkin’HK」应用程序。该应用程序利用香港特别行政区政府「空间数据共享平台」提供的开放空间数据,推广「易行城市」概念。通过整合可视化三维地图、三维行人道路网、地址信息及社区设施等多元空间数据资源,平台可为公众提供有关步行环境的实用信息,支援易行度研究及相关规划工作,并促进社区参与,共同建设更宜行、更共融及以人为本的城市。 通过是次三方协作,研究小组将成为跨界交流与合作的重要平台,汇聚地理空间智能、社会创新及跨学科专业知识,推动切实可行、共融及可持续的土地与空间方案,助力香港持续迈向智慧、具韧性及以人为本的城市。

倪一清教授、工程师荣获中国工程院第十六届光华工程科技奖

理大学者荣获华为「难题揭榜」火花奖 彰显大学产学研协作与科研转化实力

新任可持续城市发展研究院院长及碳中和资源工程研究中心主任任命

我们欣然宣布,建筑环境及能源工程学系建筑环境及能源学讲座教授牛建磊教授,获委任为可持续城市发展研究院院长,任期由2026年7月1日起生效。 牛教授是国际知名的建筑环境与能源领域专家,研究涵盖室内环境质素、热舒适、暖通空调系统及城市微气候等范畴。他目前正领导一项以健康与韧性城市为主题、获「研资局主题研究计划」资助的大型研究项目,并担任国际权威期刊《Energy and Buildings》主编。此外,他亦为美国供暖、制冷与空调工程师学会(ASHRAE)会士、国际室内空气质量学会(ISIAQ)会士,以及国际建筑性能模拟协会(IBPSA)会士。 与此同时,我们亦非常高兴宣布,徐春保教授获委任为碳中和资源工程研究中心主任,以及土木及环境工程学系先进生物精炼讲座教授,任期由2026年7月2日起生效。 徐教授经全球招聘后加入理大,为国际领先的先进生物精炼及可持续资源工程领域学者,拥有逾20年研究经验,至今已发表超过400篇期刊论文,并持有12项国际专利。他在生物质及有机废料资源利用方面的开创性研究享誉国际,致力将相关资源转化为再生燃料、绿色化学品及生物聚合物材料。他亦为加拿大化学学会会士、加拿大工程院院士,以及加拿大工程学会会士。 我们谨向履新的牛教授及徐教授致以诚挚祝贺,并期待在两位教授的卓越领导下,可持续城市发展研究院及碳中和资源工程研究中心将持续深化研究工作,推动科研卓越,并为可持续城市发展及碳中和目标作出更大贡献。

旅游业数字化转型研究中心与亚太旅游协会预测:亚太地区入境旅客人次料于2028年达 7.892亿

Exploring a New Global Frontier in Neuroscience: Cambridge NeuroWorks and PolyU PAIR Joint Seminar Series

We are delighted to announce that the second seminar of the Cambridge NeuroWorks and PolyU PAIR Joint Seminar Series will be held on 21 July 2026 (Tuesday).  The seminar titled “Bioelectronic Systems as Neural Interfaces” will be delivered by Prof. John A. ROGERS of Northwestern University, U.S.A. Prof. John A. ROGERS is Director of the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics in the Northwest University.  He has co-authored nearly 1000 papers and is co-inventor on more than 100 patents, over 70 of which have been licensed to major companies or to start-ups that have emerged from his laboratories.  His research has been recognised through numerous honours, including the James Prize for Science and Technology Integration from the National Academy of Sciences, U.S.A. (2022) and the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award (2024).  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the U.S.A. In this seminar, Prof. Rogers will explore the transformative field of bioelectronic neural interfaces, which are reshaping neuroscience and opening up new avenues for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.  He will also discuss how advanced electronic and optoelectronic technologies can be seamlessly integrated with soft biological tissues, enabling the precise monitoring and modulation of neural circuits across 1D, 2D and 3D architectures. 透过污水监测追踪流感传播:史丹福大学研究揭示公共卫生新机遇

2026年6月29日,美国史丹福大学 Alexandria BOEHM 教授应邀主讲理大高等研究院杰出学人讲座,题为「透过美国未经处理污水推断人类与动物流感的传播与病毒多样性」。讲座吸引逾80位人士到场参与,并有约15,600名观众透过多个社交媒体平台同步观看直播。 讲座中,Boehm教授介绍污水监测在传染病监控中的重要作用,并说明病毒讯号如何及时反映小区内的传播趋势。她指出,在污水固体中检测到的甲型流感RNA,可有效反映季节性流感的传播趋势,并准确追踪流感季节的开始、高峰及结束。这些数据不仅有助掌握疫情发展,亦为临床决策和公共卫生沟通提供重要参考。 Boehm教授进一步指出,污水中的甲型流感RNA浓度与小区感染情况高度吻合。由她领导的污水监测项目 WastewaterSCAN 最初仅在两个试点开展,现已扩展至美国40个州份及超过150座污水处理厂。多年来的监测数据不仅揭示了流感在不同季节及地区的传播模式,亦显示其流行情况与呼吸道合胞病毒等其他呼吸道病毒之间存在密切关联。 讲座亦探讨如何利用污水监测识别流感病毒亚型。Boehm教授表示,甲型流感RNA总量固然可反映疫情趋势,但亚型信息对评估疫苗有效性及疾病严重程度同样不可或缺。透过分析血凝素(HA)和神经氨酸酶(NA)基因序列,研究团队能从污水样本中辨识当前流行的病毒株,包括H3N2、H1N1及H5N1,进一步掌握不同流感病毒株的分布与传播情况。 除了反映人类感染情况外,污水中的动物流感讯号亦为疾病传播监测提供重要线索。Boehm教授表示,相关数据有助追踪美国牛群禽流感疫情的发展,并评估动物之间的传播风险。随着宏基因组学技术日趋成熟,研究人员已能从污水样本中组装新型流感病毒基因组,从而更深入了解病毒的演化轨迹。 Boehm教授强调,了解当前流行的病毒亚型不仅有助提升疫苗研发效率,亦能及早识别潜在的病毒重组风险,从而加强对新兴传染病威胁的防范能力。她总结,随着污水监测技术持续发展,研究人员未来或可预测哪些流感基因序列将成为主流,为预防性疫苗研发及下一季疫苗株的选择提供更坚实的科学基础。 讲座最后由理大可持续城市发展研究院院长李向东教授主持问答环节。现场及在线观众踊跃参与讨论,并与Boehm教授就污水监测及流感防控等议题深入交流。 按此重温
