China Manned Space delegation visits PolyU

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) extended its warmest welcome to the China Manned Space delegation on the important occasion of their visit to the University. During the visit, the delegation participated in a memorable event, “A Dialogue between the China manned space delegation and PolyU students and faculty members”, held at the Jockey Club Auditorium. At the event, they engaged in discussion and exchange in the presence of an audience of approximately 700 PolyU students and faculty members. Dr CHOI Yuk Lin, Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Dr WANG Weiming, Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr Tim LUI, Chairman of the University Grants Committee; PolyU Council Chairman Dr LAM Tai-fai; and PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG attended the event to welcome the delegation, expressing their pride and admiration for the successful manned space missions accomplished by the Nation in recent years. Led by Mr LIN Xiqiang, Deputy Director General of the China Manned Space Agency, the delegation included Mr YANG Hong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Designer of the Space Station System of the China Manned Space Programme, and Researcher of the China Academy of Space Technology; Mr YAN Pu, Deputy Director of the Information Office, China Manned Space Agency; Mr LIU Boming, Astronaut at the Astronaut Center of China and Shenzhou-12 Astronaut; Mr CHEN Dong, Astronaut Team Leader at the Astronaut Centre of China and Shenzhou-14 Astronaut; Mr DONG Guangliang, Researcher of the Beijing Institute of Tracking and Telecommunications Technology and Chief Designer of the Tracking, Telemetry and Command System; Mr CHEN Jie, Head of the Scientific Programme and Quality Control Division, China Manned Space Agency; as well as Ms YANG Xin, Head of the Information Office, China Manned Space Agency. In his welcome remarks, Dr Lam Tai-fai said, “Following the visit of a delegation of esteemed Chinese astronautical scientists to PolyU in 2021, it is a great and exciting honour for PolyU students and faculty members to now have a face-to-face encounter with the China manned space delegation on our campus. This opportunity allows them to witness and be encouraged by the Nation’s space development at close quarters. Indeed, recent years have witnessed extraordinary achievements in aerospace technologies by our Nation, which both inspire us and fill us with pride. With over 30 years of experience in deep space research, PolyU is the only university in Hong Kong that has participated in various national space projects. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Nation for its trust and support. PolyU will continue to strengthen its research capabilities, reinforce cooperation with Mainland researchers, and make every effort to better integrate itself into the overall development of the Nation. Moving forward, we are committed to cultivating young individuals’ enthusiasm towards space exploration, encouraging them to delve into scientific research in order to contribute to the Nation’s advancement and support Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology hub.” At the event, three representatives from the delegation delivered presentations to share their experiences in manned space missions. They then engaged in discussion and exchange on aerospace technologies, astronaut training, and life in space with a doctoral student and an undergraduate student. They were joined by Prof. YUNG Kai-leung, Sir Sze-yuen Chung Professor in Precision Engineering, Chair Professor of Precision Engineering and Associate Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Director of the Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations of PolyU; as well as Prof. WU Bo, Fiona Cheung Professor in Spatial Science, Associate Head (Research) of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, and Associate Director of Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations of PolyU. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng said, “The achievements of our country in aerospace technologies not only showcase the strength of our Nation but also foster advancements in related fields for the betterment of mankind. PolyU has played a vital role in various key space exploration missions for the Nation and will continue to provide staunch support to University researchers to take part in national space missions in the future.” Since 2010, PolyU has been participating in the Nation’s space exploration programmes and collaborating with the China Academy of Space Technology to develop and manufacture sophisticated space instruments. PolyU researchers have also used advanced topographic mapping technologies to evaluate and identify the best landing sites for spacecraft. These contributions supported the success of the Nation’s lunar exploration missions, including Chang'e-3, Chang'e-4 and Chang'e-5, as well as the Mars exploration project Tianwen-1. In 2021, PolyU established the “Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations”. In 2022, the University established the “Joint Research Centre of Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology” in collaboration with the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology.

PolyU joins hands with Hangzhou and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province to build innovation platforms for advancing technologies and cultural tourism

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has teamed up with Hangzhou and Wenzhou, two major cities in Zhejiang Province, to build innovation platforms for advanced technology and innovation, as well as cultural tourism, with a view to deepening their collaborations with Hong Kong. The signing and unveiling ceremony of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) was held at the Wenzhou People’s Congress Hall on 9 November, marking the official landing of the Institute in Wenzhou. The Institute strives to foster technological innovation, talent cultivation, and research and development (R&D), developing Wenzhou into an innovation and technology (I&T) hub. Separately, PolyU signed agreements with the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government and the Administration Committee of Wenzhou Bay New Area. Witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng, Secretary of Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr GE Yiping, Director of the Standing Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Congress; and Mr CHEN Zuorong, Chairman of the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference, the agreement at the municipal level was signed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Mr WANG Zhenyong, Vice-Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government; while at district level it was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr ZHOU Yi-fu, Secretary of the Longwan District Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government. PolyU is the first university in Hong Kong to collaborate with Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government in setting up a technology and innovation research institute in Wenzhou. The Institute aims to promote I&T development in the Southeastern coastal region, in response to the industrial development needs of Wenzhou and Zhejiang Province specifically, and the Nation more broadly. The Institute will engage in close collaborations with local key industries in the areas of marine engineering equipment and technology, flexible electronics, and ultra-precision manufacturing to advance their core technologies, outcome transformation, talent development, and innovation and entrepreneurship, promoting the high-quality economic development of the cites. In his speech, Dr LAM Tai-fai emphasised that PolyU values research and innovation, actively promoting the transformation of research outcomes into practical applications, and believes the joint establishment of the Institute holds great promise. With its strong research capabilities and a pool of world-class scholars, the University provides a solid foundation for deep collaboration between Hong Kong and Wenzhou, which has a thriving private economy with a solid industrial foundation with hardworking and innovative talents. PolyU will further leverage its advantages in talents, academia, research, and internationalisation, while captalising on Wenzhou’s industrial clusters, innovation, talent cultivation, and R&D services to explore new methods, concepts, and perspectives in research for accelerating the transformation and application of research achievements as well as driving industrial upgrading. This innovation platform will serve as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with various stakeholders in Wenzhou in terms of talent attraction, innovation ecosystem, cultural inheritance and exchange, making greater contributions to high-quality regional development. Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng stated that innovation is in Wenzhou’s genes. In recent years, Wenzhou has always kept in mind the earnest instructions from General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping to continue writing the history of innovation. Wenzhou is determined to take the path of innovation-driven development by enhancing its capabilities for innovation, developing strategic innovation platforms and introducing university-industry research collaboration platforms. The cooperation with PolyU is perfectly timed, at the right place and with the right people. The Institute will become a powerful engine to develop Wenzhou into a nationally innovative city, a new force in fostering two industrial clusters with output valued at the trillion-yuan level, and a bridge to connect to global innovation resources. It will help enhance Wenzhou’s competitiveness in technological innovation, shape new trends in industrial development, and attract innovative international talents. Wenzhou will do its best to provide efficient services to ensure the smooth operation and development of the Institute. The PolyU delegation not only introduced the Institute’s development plan and presented a research showcase of the latest technology achievements for local enterprises, but also made visits to local universities. Moving forward, the two parties will stive to strengthen cooperation in technology, as well as promote academic and cultural exchanges between Wenzhou and Hong Kong to achieve a win-win outcome. Previously, the PolyU-Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute was also officially launched with a signing and unveiling ceremony on 7 November, in Hangzhou. The Institute aspires to promote advanced technology in the fields of Grand Canal culture and tourism, intelligent transportation and medical aesthetics, and will initially establish three research centres, namely the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Research Center, Intelligent Rail Transit Center, and Digital Medical Aesthetics Research Center. These centres will collaborate with Hangzhou’s key industries and university research institutes in information technology and internet, cultural tourism, smart cities, biomedicine, and high-end equipment manufacturing, providing exchange platforms for researchers, technology innovation services for local enterprises, as well as application scenarios for cutting-edge PolyU technologies. Identified as one of the important provinces for national panning, Zhejiang province has been committed to promoting the coordinated development of education, technology and the economy. The establishment of the two new research institutes aims to build closer ties between Hong Kong and the two cities, bringing together innovative talents and resources. It also seeks to strengthen industry-university research collaborations and connect local industries with international markets, so as to develop Zhejiang into a dynamic and innovation-driven hub and make a meaningful contribution to the Nation’s technological innovation and cultural tourism development.

PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute officially inaugurated Joining force with Mainland enterprises to cultivate industry-academia-research collaborations and propel I&T development in the Yangtze River Delta

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Wuxi Municipal People’s Government of Jiangsu Province have jointly established the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute (The Institute), and an Inauguration Ceremony cum Industry-University-Research Collaboration Agreement Signing Ceremony was held on 2 November. Located in Wuxi, the Institute serves as a platform to drive advanced research and innovation, as well as nurture innovation and technology (I&T) talents. It has entered into agreements with ten high-tech enterprises in Mainland China to foster industry-university-research collaborations, driving the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T development. A delegation led by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost; and Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) visited Wuxi and met with Mr DU Xiaogang, Communist Party Secretary of Wuxi; Mr ZHOU Changqing, Member of the Wuxi Party Committee Standing Committee and Head of the United Front Work Department; Mr QIN Yongxin and Mr ZHOU Wendong, Vice Mayors of Wuxi; and Mr CUI Rongguo, Party Chief of Wuxi National Hi-tech District and Party Secretary of Xinwu District. They had an in-depth exchange on reinforcing cooperation between Jiangsu and Hong Kong, along with leaders of various levels from the Wuxi Municipal Government and representatives from domestic companies. PolyU is the first Hong Kong tertiary institution to establish a research institute in Wuxi and participate in the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T drive. The Institute will focus on three key areas: building an internationally high-end research and innovation platform in the fields of aviation and aeronautical engineering, advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, new materials and telecommunications networks; establishing an incubation base to translate research outcomes into real-world solutions; and cultivating outstanding engineers and technopreneurs with a global perspective through PolyU’s leading engineering doctorate and postdoctoral fellowship programmes. The Institute will leverage PolyU’s global networks and impact to attract technology companies to the Wuxi High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, organise industry and academic exchange activities, and expand channels for international exchange and collaborations. To facilitate the translation of research achievements, the Institute signed agreements with ten domestic high-tech enterprises in Wuxi, namely Wuxi Hyatech Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Asia-pacific Aviation Technology Co., Ltd; Xiangsheng Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Sanlian Bioengineering Co., Ltd; Wuxi International Life Science Innovation Campus; Wuxi Autowell Technology Co., Ltd; Hymson Laser Technology Group Co., Ltd; Tonghe Carbon Materials Technology (Wuxi) Co., Ltd; Loulan Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd; and GRG Metrology & Test (Wuxi) Co., Ltd. The Institute will serve as a platform to facilitate knowledge transfer and support enterprises in achieving technological advancement by leveraging PolyU’s expertise in innovation and research. Dr Lam Tai-fai, remarked, “By capitalising on its expertise in talent development, academic and research innovations, and global network, PolyU will collaborate with Wuxi’s industries to enhance R&D services, expedite the translation of research outcomes into practical applications, and promote industrial upgrading. By pooling our efforts, we can unlock the powerful synergy between government, industry and academia enabling us to open a new chapter for the I&T development of Jiangsu, Hong Kong and the Nation.” During the visit, the PolyU delegates also introduced to the Wuxi Municipal Government and enterprise representatives the University’s engineering doctorate programmes, research achievements in biomedical engineering through industry-academic-research collaborations, as well as the Institute’s future development and talent development plans. Moving forward, the Institute will continue to join hands with Wuxi’s higher education institutions and enterprises in building an innovation ecosystem that will contribute to the high-quality development of Wuxi, Hong Kong and the Nation.

PolyU and Hefei Luyang People’s Government to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hefei Luyang People’s Government have reached an agreement to jointly establish the PolyU-Hefei Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Research Institute), with the aim of fostering in-depth and effective collaboration in industry, academia and research and cultivating talents. The establishment of the Research Institute contributes to enhancing and facilitating research development, academic exchange, nurturing of talent and knowledge transfer in various fields, including biomedical and sensing precision technology, and aerospace information. By leveraging the research and academic excellence of PolyU, these collaborations support the development of a top-notch innovation platform in Hefei. Hefei is one of the national core areas for comprehensive technological innovation development. It has the first batch of national laboratories and is one of the cities with the most large-scale scientific facilities in the Mainland. The cooperation will also focus on creating a sustainable incubator for start-ups, driving innovation in emerging industries, developing key core technologies, and promoting their application based on the needs of Hefei’s economic development. The agreement was signed in Heifei city on 25 October in Hefei city by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr SHI Kun, Executive Vice-Head of the Luyang District Government. The signing was witnessed by Prof. DONG Cheng, Associate Vice President (Mainland Research Advancement) of PolyU; Prof. CHEN Wu, Head of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics of PolyU; Prof. NI Yiqing, Director of National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Centre (Hong Kong Branch) of PolyU; Mr GAO Qiang, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Luyang District Committee; Mr ZHU Huajun, Director of the Luyang District Party Committee Office; and Mr SHEN Bin, Director of the Administrative Committee of Luyang Economic and Development Zone. Prof. Christopher Chao, said, “PolyU is a research-oriented university known for its innovation and unique strengths in fundamental research and technology innovation. By partnering with Hefei to establish the Research Institute, we will actively engage in diverse projects encompassing technological research and development, entrepreneurial incubation, and talent cultivation. Our aim is to make valuable contributions to the advancement of cutting-edge industries in the country, while staying at the forefront of global technology.” Mr Gao Qiang, said, “PolyU is a world-renowned comprehensive research university, consistently ranking among the top 100 in global university rankings for its educational and research excellence. Luyang District serves as an important carrier for Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center and has been included in the top 100 regions in terms of comprehensive strength for five consecutive terms. The successful establishment of the Research Institute reflects the strategic vision of both parties and will undoubtedly create a bright development prospect in the future. It will also help Luyang to reach to new heights in technology.” During this trip, the delegation also visited local universities and research institutes, as well as relevant industrial chain enterprises in Luyang District, to conduct in-depth exchanges and explore opportunities for university, industry, and government collaboration.

PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute officially unveiled; First research institute established by PolyU beyond the Greater Bay Area

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government held a signing cum unveiling ceremony on 2 September at which the jointly established PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute), based in Jinjiang, was officially inaugurated. This marks a significant achievement in promoting deeper cooperation between Fujian and Hong Kong, as well as a key step by both the University and the City towards creating a better future together. The Research Institute aims to nurture outstanding engineers and high-quality innovative entrepreneurial talents who are technology application-oriented, and strives to become a hub of technology innovation and attract a cluster of emerging industries helping to shape the future and foster global connections. Dr Lam Tai-fai in his speech stated that technology and innovation are the key forces to drive the development of a society. Jinjiang is a city renowned for its famous Chinese brands and remarkable advancements in technology, economy, culture and art. As a world-class research university, PolyU will take Jinjiang as a starting point to support its technological innovation and strengthen technical cooperation in the areas of textiles, smart manufacturing, integrated circuits and sustainable technology. The University will also promote the transformation and application of technological achievement, contributing to the “Jinjiang Experience” of innovation and development in Jinjiang, Quanzhou and Fujian. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng stated that it was his first visit to Jinjiang and he had the opportunity to visit numerous enterprises, leaving him impressed by their “high quality and brand creation”, which are prominent features of Jinjiang's economic and social development. With a strength in basic research and innovation entrepreneurship, PolyU is dedicated not only to producing world-class scientific research, but also to making a positive impact on socio-economic development. Jinjiang's solid and robust industrial foundation provides an excellent platform for PolyU and he believes that the University can become a strong driving force in promoting the development of Jinjiang's science and technology industry, leading to mutual benefits. Mr Zhang Wenxian shared his view that education, technology and talent provide foundational and strategic support for building a modern socialist country, and are also crucial for the high-quality development of the private sector economy. Apart from the signing and unveiling ceremony, key representatives from the Research Institute introduced research developments and work plans related to textile technology, future food, microelectronics, innovation and technology policy, to local government representatives, research institutions and enterprises. Officials from the Jinjiang Municipal People's Government visited PolyU for the first time after the resumption of normal travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland early this year. Since then, the two parties have maintained close contact and had frequent interactions, reaching consensus and establishing the Research Institute in six months, demonstrating their strong commitment and a high level of efficiency. PolyU hopes to deepen cooperation with local enterprises in Jinjiang through the Research Institute, promote research and help to transform core technologies, in time expanding from Jinjiang to Quanzhou and the entire province. The University also aims to strengthen industry-academia-research collaboration between Fujian and Hong Kong, build a new paradigm of cooperation between Fujian Province and Hong Kong, and cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents with advanced technological knowledge and global vision.

PolyU and Guangming District Government to establish joint industrial technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Guangming District Government, Shenzhen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly establish the PolyU-Shenzhen Industrial Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Research Institute), aimed at strengthening and facilitating the exchange of pedagogy, technology and talent between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. PolyU is the first Hong Kong higher education institution to achieve a strategic partnership with Guangming District Government. The University envisions effective collaboration in industry, academia and research, leveraging the advantages of PolyU's scientific talents and innovative research technologies, and attracting more high-quality Hong Kong enterprises and researchers to the region. The collaboration will involve PolyU faculty members, students and alumni engaging in scientific research, exchanging ideas and starting businesses in Shenzhen. The MoU was signed on 28 August at the Guangming Science City in Shenzhen. Witnessed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, PolyU President, Prof. Kwok-Yin WONG, Vice President (Education), and Prof. CHOW Ming-cheung, Head of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, as well as Ms CAI Ying, Guangming District Party Secretary, Mr QIU Haohang, District Mayor, and Ms Yang LI, Head of the United Front Work Department, the MoU was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr YAO Gaoke, Deputy District Mayor of Guangming District. In his speech, Prof. Jin-Guang TENG explained that PolyU is an innovative and research-oriented university with unique strengths in fundamental research and innovation entrepreneurship. The Research Institute will closely integrate with the development characteristics and planning of Shenzhen and Guangming District. The Research Institute will leverage the University’s strengths in scientific research, target cutting-edge scientific issues, focus on innovation, and make producing significant scientific research outcomes a core objective. Alongside the construction and operation of major technological infrastructure in Guangming Science City, the Research Institute will actively promote the transfer and transformation of relevant technological achievements, contributing to the Nation's achievement of high-level technological self-reliance and strength. Representatives of Guangming District stated that through this collaboration with PolyU, they will fully utilise PolyU’s advantage as a “super connector”, who plays a leading role in supporting technological innovation and industrial development through its strong disciplinary strengths and national key laboratories. By integrating the resource advantages of both parties, the aim is to build an internationally leading high-end research platform in the fields of life sciences and high-end manufacturing, creating an innovative community that brings together scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and innovators. According to the MoU, the collaboration encourages and assists young faculty and alumnus from PolyU to start businesses in Guangming District, while establishing a sustainable development base for technological innovation and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, it also aims to cultivate future industry leaders with innovative drive and advanced experience in scientific and technological research and development, making substantive contributions to the construction of a high-level talent aggregation area in the Greater Bay Area. Through the platform of the Research Institute, both parties will further promote the deep integration of innovation, industry, funding and talent, deepening technological innovation cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and advancing the goal of high-quality development in the Greater Bay Area.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hangzhou Gongshu District People’s Government have reached an agreement to promote industry-academia-research collaboration and complementarity between Hong Kong and Hangzhou. At the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong & Macao - Zhejiang Week & Zhejiang and Hong Kong Cooperation Theme Forum 2023 on 26 June, Mr John LEE Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr YI Lianhong, Secretary of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee, and Mr LU Shan, Vice Governor of Zhejiang People's Government witnessed the signing of co-operation agreements between Zhejiang and Hong Kong. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr SHEN Jianli, Vice District Mayor of Gongshu District, signed a framework agreement to promote the establishment of the PolyU-Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute to carry out in-depth and effective industry-academia-research collaboration. The Research Institute will set up three research centres in the initial stage, tentatively named the “Rail Transit Intelligent Centre,” “Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Research Centre,” and “Digital Medical Beauty Research Centre”. The research centres will focus on three key aspects: technology research and development, entrepreneurial incubation, and talent cultivation. They aim to promote complementary advantages and coordinated development between Hangzhou and Hong Kong, which will work together to develop innovative solutions, with the development of a first-class technology innovation base to achieve mutual benefit. During the same event, Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Mr YU Zhihong, Chairman of Zhejiang Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Transportation Investment Group), signed a Zhejiang-Hong Kong cooperation agreement in scientific research. PolyU’s rail transit research team and Zhejiang Transportation Investment Group will cooperate in various aspects, such as research and development of new products and technologies, global promotion of innovative achievements, talent cultivation, and scientific research collaboration. On 27 June, Mr SONG Xinjian, Second-Level Inspector from the Hangzhou Science and Technology Bureau, led a delegation from several major administrative regions of Hangzhou (Qiantang District, Gongshu District, Yuhang District, and High-tech Industry Development Zone) and executives from several companies to PolyU campus and visited the Chinese National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Centre (Hong Kong Branch) (CNERC-Rail) and the Biomaterials Laboratory, so as to gain a deeper understanding of PolyU’s scientific research talent advantages and innovative research technology. Both parties will further explore the working plan of the Research Institute and jointly seek future cooperation opportunities. Moving forward, PolyU will continue to focus on cooperation with enterprises and closely connect with the Mainland, in order to carry out influential scientific research in various cutting-edge technology fields, promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, integrate with national development, and fully support Hong Kong in building an international innovation and technology centre.

PolyU and Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (tentative) to establish Technology and Innovation Research Institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (“EIT”, tentative) have reached an agreement to establish the PolyU-Ningbo Technology and Innovation Research Institute, aiming to strengthen and facilitate research collaboration among industry, academia and research organisations in Hong Kong and Ningbo. PolyU and EIT will collaborate in multiple fields, including advanced manufacturing, chemical energy and low-carbon sustainability development, with the overall aim of advancing innovative research technology and transforming core technologies. The operational objective is to promote complementary advantages and coordinated development between the two universities, and together develop innovative solutions to establish leading innovation hubs. PolyU envisions effective collaboration between the two universities in industry, academia and research, leveraging the advantages of PolyU's scientific talents and innovative research technologies, and attracting more high-quality Hong Kong enterprises and researchers. The collaboration will involve PolyU faculty members, students and alumni engaging in scientific research, exchanging ideas and starting businesses in Ningbo. The framework agreement was signed on the PolyU campus on 25 June 2023 by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Prof. ZHANG Dongxiao, Executive VP and Provost of EIT. The signing was witnessed by Mr. PENG Jiaxue, Zhejiang Provincial Committee Standing Committee member and Ningbo Municipal Party Secretary, Mrs Carrie LAM, Former Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, and Prof. CHEN Shiyi, President of EIT.

PolyU and Jinjiang Government to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government have reached an agreement to establish the PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute, aiming to strengthen and facilitate research collaboration among industries, academia and research organisations in Hong Kong and Jinjiang. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and Mr WANG Mingyuan, Mayor of Jinjiang, signed the relevant agreement at an event held in the Quanzhou Nanyi National High-tech Zone on 2 June. The research institute will leverage PolyU’s research strengths and achievements to meet Jinjiang’s industrial needs and facilitate the city’s industrial transformation. PolyU and Jinjiang city will partner in various fields such as new textile materials, fashion design, intelligent wearable systems, microelectronics, future food, and public policy. The two parties will also nurture entrepreneurial talents with innovative technological knowledge and a global perspective. Capitalising on PolyU’s research excellence and Jinjiang’s industrial strengths and resources, the collaboration between the two parties will support Jinjiang’s development into a top-notch innovation hub, jointly promote the two-way integration of the industrial chain and the innovation chain, and inject new impetus into the development of local high-tech industries.

PolyU and Wenzhou government sign agreement to drive the establishment of a joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government have reached an agreement to drive the formation of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute, with the aim of promoting Wenzhou to become a key innovation and technology hub for entrepreneurs and talents. Through this innovation platform which is the result of government-academia collaboration, both sides will partner in the research of core technologies in various fields including new energy, advanced materials, intelligent wearable devices, maritime engineering equipment, offshore wind power, blockchain, and fashion design. PolyU will leverage its research excellence to support Wenzhou’s development into a top-notch technology innovation base, through fostering the city’s translational research and commercialisation of research and innovation. Both sides will also join hands to nurture innovative and entrepreneurial talents who are knowledgeable about critical technologies of the future and possess a global outlook. The framework agreement was signed on PolyU’s campus on 22 May 2023 by Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU’s Vice President (Research and Innovation) and Mr WANG Zhenyong, Vice Mayor of Wenzhou. The signing was witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Dr Miranda LOU, Executive Vice President of PolyU; together with Mr LIU Xiaotao, Standing Committee Member of the Zhejiang Provincial Communist Party Committee and the Party Secretary of Wenzhou; Mr WANG Jun, Secretary General of the Wenzhou Municipal Communist Party Committee; and Mr WANG Chi, Head of the United Front Work Department of the Wenzhou Party Committee. PolyU has established strong partnerships with universities and research institutes in the Mainland. The University also collaborates with Mainland businesses and local authorities in the promotion of translational research and knowledge transfer, while actively encouraging its students to learn about the development trends and opportunities in the Mainland. Recently, PolyU has engaged numerous local governments to discuss establishing joint technology and innovation research institutes, which connect PolyU’s capabilities and achievements in basic research to the needs of local industries. These collaborations would contribute to the Nation’s self-reliance in its pursuit of technological advancement and benefit the development of local manufacturing sectors.
