OpenAI has released the o3 and o4-mini models in April 2025, replacing the earlier o1 and o3-mini versions.
o3 model
The OpenAI o3 model has upgraded its reasoning capability over o1 and has added agentic capabilities. The o3 model is trained via reinforcement learning to intelligently utilize tools like web search, code interpretation, and memory in a loop.
Because o3 actively plans and uses tools like search iteratively and natively, it can find up-to-date information. The OpenAI o3 reasoning model with vision capabilities, is ideal for complex queries requiring multi-faceted analysis. o3 is strong at analyzing images, charts and graphics. o3 is trained to think thoroughly before responding and take longer lead time for turnaround. o4-mini
The OpenAI o4-mini reasoning model, equipped with vision capabilities, outperforms o3-mini in math, coding, visual tasks as well as in domains like data science. Use o4-mini for cost-effective reasoning tasks that demand advanced reasoning capabilities. For further details, please refer to the o4-mini model introduction.
Effective 1 June 2025, the prevailing o1 (2024-12-17) model and o3-mini (2025-01-31) model will be replaced by the o3 (2025-04-16) and o4-mini (2025-04-16) models respectively, on the PolyU Gen AI app. Please export your chat history before midnight on 31 May if you would like to keep a copy.
o3 will consume monthly usage entitlement of 10 credits and 40 credits per thousand tokens for input and output (include chain of thought tokens), respectively.
o4-mini will consume a monthly usage entitlement of 1.1 credits and 4.4 credits per thousand tokens for input and output (include chain of thought tokens), respectively. o4-mini is 89% less in usage fees compared to o3.
GPT-4.1
OpenAI released GPT-4.1 in April 2025, with improved price-to-performance over GPT-4o. GPT-4.1 offers better instruction following and improved on long-context comprehension. GPT-4.1 mini
OpenAI released GPT-4.1 mini in April 2025 with improved price-to-performance over GPT-4o mini and GPT-4o in selected performance benchmarks. GPT-4.1 mini offers better instruction following, reduced latency and support for a larger context size. GPT-4.1 mini supports image-to-text conversion in addition to text chat. GPT-4.1 will consume a monthly usage entitlement of 2 credits and 8 credits per thousand tokens for input and output, respectively which is a 20% lower usage fee compared to GPT-4o.
GPT-4.1-mini will consume a monthly usage entitlement of 0.4 credits and 1.6 credits per thousand tokens for input and output, respectively, which is 80% less in usage fee compared to GPT-4.1.

The Qwen3-235B-A22B provides a hybrid approach to problem-solving: users can select thinking mode to tackle complex problems with extended reasoning or opt for non-thinking mode for quick responses to simper questions. The Qwen3-235B-A22B open-sourced model has been provisioned on-premises for use by PolyU staff and students effective from 1 June 2025. The use of Qwen3 model will not consume monthly usage credits entitlement.
ByteDance Doubao
Doubao created by ByteDance is a popular conversational AI chatbot with multimodal capabilities, including text, image, and audio, catering to versatile needs ranging from content creation and research to entertainment.
The web version of Doubao has been added to the PolyU Gen AI app on 1 June to enhance access for staff and students.
