Programme Aims

The aim of the programme is to provide graduates with specialised fashion and textile knowledge at the technician/supervisory level for various sectors of the industry, including textile processing, coloration and finishing, fashion and clothing, fashion and textile merchandising and fashion retailing. It also aims to equip graduates with generic skills for professional and personal development.

Different awards are offered based on the fields of studies selected. Graduates are expected to attain a broad perspective of fashion and textiles and achieve a deeper understanding in the areas of their specialised awards.

Programme Characteristics

 

This is the only Higher Diploma programme in Asia that covers all sectors of the fashion and textile product pipeline. The programme offers the following five specialisms and students could opt for their preferred specialism after the first year of study:

  • Coloration & Finishing
  • Fashion & Clothing
  • Fashion & Textile Merchandising
  • Fashion Retailing
  • Textile Processing

Programme Structure

Compulsory credits are taken in the first year, after which students can choose their Specialism for the following semesters. Students have to take 30 compulsory credits in the first year. For the second year, they need to take 27 compulsory credits and 6 elective credits.

Career Prospects

Students are qualified for a wide range of technical and managerial positions in product design and development, production, quality assurance, planning and control, technology innovation, merchandising and trading and fashion retailing. They also have ample opportunities to enhance their exposure through liaison with working partners in the Chinese mainland and overseas.

Professional Recognition

Graduates with 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience can apply for Licentiateship of the Textile Institute (LTI), UK or Membership of the Hong Kong Institute of Textiles and Apparel (MHKITA).

Entrance Requirements

For Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Applicants

Satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirements of 5 HKDSE subjects at Level 2 including English Language and Chinese Language. The following relevant Applied Learning subjects (with a maximum of 2) can be accepted to meet the entrance requirement of the programme:

Subjects with the Highest Weighting

We give the highest weighting in the calculation of admission scores to the following subjects:

  • Chinese
  • English

Alternative Entry Route

  • A Higher Diploma or above in a relevant field of study (e.g. textile or clothing studies) from any higher education institution.
  • A Higher Certificate in a relevant field of study (e.g. textile or clothing studies) from PolyU.
  • A Diploma in a relevant field of study (e.g. textile, clothing studies or design studies) from PolyU or the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) or the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA).
  • An Advanced Diploma in a relevant field of study (e.g. Knitwear Studies and Merchandising, Apparel Studies and Merchandising or Fashion Design) from the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (HKITA).
  • Other equivalent qualifications in relevant fields of study - subject to the discretion of the Programme Committee.
