About the Scheme

Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their full-time PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions. 

ITC invites worldwide graduates with academic excellence, research potential, good communication skills and leadership abilities for their PhD studies. The normal study period is three years (for Postgraduate Degree holder) or four years (for Bachelor degree holder). The Scheme will offer a maximum of four-year tuition scholarship, a monthly stipend, and conference and research related travel allowance for awardees for a maximum period of four years.

 

Eligibility

Candidates seeking admission as full-time PhD students who would like to pursue their career in academic research and teaching in fashion and textiles, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience and ethnic background, are most welcome.

Candidates should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

 

Annual Stipend & Allowance 

The Scheme will provide a stipend of HK$20,000 per month (approx. US$2,600 per month) and conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 per year (approx. US$1,300 per year) for awardees for a maximum period of three years. In addition, PolyU will award those with a four-year normal study period the same provision during their fourth year of study and award each PhD Fellowship awardee with a tuition scholarship covering the entire normal study period. Hall accommodation in the first year of study will also be guaranteed.

Admission Requirements

  • General Requirements

Applicants shall normally hold a postgraduate degree containing a significant research component, such as a dissertation, conferred by a recognised university.

  • Waiver of Entrance Requirements

In exceptional circumstances applicants other than those stipulated above may be permitted to register.  For example, applicants with a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent, may be admitted directly to the PhD programme. Such applicant may be required to pass an examination.

  • Language Requirements

Applicants who have not obtained a degree of which the language of instruction was English from a recognised university are normally required to obtain

  • an overall score of at least 6.5 (with score for the writing component at 6.0 or above) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • 550 or above in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for the paper-based test (with a score of at least 4 out of 6 in the Test of Written English), or 80 or above in the internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above).

All English language test scores are considered valid for five years after the date of the test. Consideration will be given to acceptable scores obtained in other internationally recognised public examinations, such as GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), as deemed appropriate.

 

Selection Criteria

Applications will be considered on the basis of the information (such as academic/ professional qualifications and work experience) that is provided on the application form. You may be required to attend an interview and/or test.

 

Application Procedures

Step 1: Submission of Initial Application

Each applicant is allowed to make one initial application only to RGC through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) Electronic System to obtain a HKPFS reference number on or before 1 December 2017 12:00 noon Hong Kong time (GMT + 8 hours). Preference on the institutions must be indicated if s/he decides to try for two institutions, instead of one. No change to the choice of institutions/preference is allowed after application submission.

Step 2: Submission of Full Application to PolyU

Applicants will then submit a full application to no more than two institutions by quoting the reference number. Applicants who have chosen two PolyU programmes in the initial application are reminded to submit a separate full application for EACH chosen programme to PolyU. A non-refundable  application fee of HK$ 150  is required for each full application. Submission of full applications to PolyU should be made via the Web Application System on or before 1 December 2017 23:59 Hong Kong time (GMT + 8 hours).
